Decker wins as Challenger beats the rain

Indiana, PA (August 4) - A pair of rain showers hit the Challenger Raceway to delay the start of the racing program on Saturday night. But the track crews worked hard against the excess moisture that was put down to the track surface, and the program was completed in its entirety. Tom Decker was glad that it was, as the Tyrone, PA driver raced to his second 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature victory of the season. He would not be the only person glad to see the program completed, as there were several others. Among them were Jeff Taylor from Saltsburg, PA, who won the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature for the fourth time this season. Winning his first feature event in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature was Nick Reges from Butler, PA. Don Rodgers from Homer City, PA scored for the fourth time in the North East Locators Strictly Stock feature. An added attraction for the program sponsored by Townsend Gas and Oil was the Dwarf Cars, as Jim Kurpakis from Leechburg, PA was the winner.

The 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature started with Jason Carnahan and Tom Decker on the front row. Decker gained command at the drop of the green flag, as Sammy Stile passed Carnahan for second on lap 3. Decker showed command as the final yellow flag would appear on lap 11. With Decker in front, the battle was for second as Stile felt a challenge from Carnahan and 12th starting Dave Satterlee. But as the laps clicked by, Stile inched away from that battle as Decker continued to have things his way. However, when race traffic entered the picture in the closing laps, it allowed Stile to make a late charge. Decker made the right moves on the final lap to deal with the traffic, and raced on to his second victory of the season. Behind Stile in second, Carnahan would race home in the third position. Point leader Satterlee held off Rodney Phillips to finish fourth. Dave Norton was sixth, as Dave Peterman, Gary Lyle, D.J. Troutman, and Wally Fox rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Stile and Carnahan.

Jim Bertges and Jeff Jones led the 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature to the green flag with Bertges taking the lead at the start. Between caution periods, Bertges led until a lap 5 restart when Jeff Taylor pulled up to challenge. When Bertges got out of shape off of turn four, point leader Taylor flashed by to gain the lead on lap 6. A lap 7 tangle required the red flag as eight cars were involved. The top two would race closely during the remaining distance, but Taylor would hold on to collect his fourth feature win of the season. Bertges settled for a close second, with Bob Rougeaux turning in a solid run for third. After being involved in a lap 2 yellow flag, Bob Skwara charged back through the pack to finish fourth. Chuck Kennedy was fifth, after being involved in the lap 7 incident. Jeff Jones and Rougeaux were the heat race winners.

Nick Reges and Randy Caldwell led the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature to the green flag. Reges gained command at the green flag, as a lap 4 yellow flag would eliminate the point leader Jeff Walters. This restart set up an extended run under the green, as Reges had built up a comfortable advantage. His lead would be cut considerably as he had trouble negotiating race traffic. A lap 11 yellow would clear the track, but put the competition on his back bumper. Rob Kosecki and Chris Schneider would join the battle for the lead in the four-lap run to the finish. But Reges was up to the challenge, as he would claim his first win in becoming the sixth different winner. Kosecki and Schneider finished a very close second and third. Rick Burris made his first season start and finished fourth, with Tommy Dembowski fifth. Heat winners were Schneider and Kosecki.

For the fourth time this season, Don Rodgers was the winner in the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks. Quickly taking command from the pole position, Rodgers would outdistance the field leaving the competition to battle for second. With the entire event run under the green flag, the John Mazey nosed Mark Marian for second place, and those two drivers ended the night tied for the division point lead. Tom Taylor was fourth, with heat race winner Bill Hebenthal finishing fifth.

The winner of the Dwarf Car feature event was Jim Kurpakis. From outside row one, Kurpakis took the lead at the start of the 15-lap event and led the entire distance in the caution-free event. In the battle for second, Doug Peterman nosed John Witkowski. Fourth went to Jesse Bergmann, as heat race winner W.L. Stile. was fifth.
