McDOWELL GRABS $40,000 USA NATIONALS WIN

NEW RICHMOND, WI - Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA left no doubt that he
had
the dominant car Saturday night at Cedar Lake Speedway by picking up his
first United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series win of the
season in the USA Nationals.

The 1999 UDTRA Champion led all 100 laps in his Larry Shaw Race Cars
Rocket/Hatfield Grand Prix to pick up the $40,000 top prize. At two
different points in the race, McDowell held a half lap lead over the second
place car.

Not even the only caution flag of the race on lap 85 could slow down
McDowell. By lap 90, McDowell packed his bags, turned in the key and
checked out to a full straightaway lead over Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL.

"The car was just awesome tonight, and I have to thank my car owner Larry
Shaw, my brother and crew chief Shane, and Mark Richards of Rocket Chassis
for that," McDowell said. "We learned a lot about the Rocket Chassis when
we were here in June for the Masters 100 weekend, and it paid off tonight."

Although McDowell was never challenged for the lead in the race, he did
have one very close call on lap 47 when Darren Miller of Chadwick, IL spun
his Sterling NAPA Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo in front of McDowell
in
turn four. Miller did a 360, kept going, and the green light stayed on.

"When Darren Miller spun in front of me, I just closed my eyes and when
I
didn't hear or feel any crunching, I knew I made it through," McDowell said.
"We've been leading a couple of races recently, only to have trouble that
has taken us out of contention, so maybe our luck is turning for the
better."

Babb held off the defending and four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist
of Mooresburg, TN to take the second spot in the Car City Co./Petroff Towing
Rayburn/Dickens Monte Carlo. Bloomquist finished third in the Miller
Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom Mustang. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY finished
fifth in the Valvoline/Mopar Performance Rocket/Stanton Intrepid.

Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA debuted a brand new Seubert Calf Ranches
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo that carried him from the 19th starting
spot to a fifth-place finish. That earned Birkhofer the JE Pistons Hard
Charger of the Race honors.

The 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR took the sixth spot
in
the Petroff Towing/J&J Steel Rayburn/Clements Grand Prix. Moyer was the
last car to finish the race on the lead lap.

UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series point leader Rick Eckert of York, PA finished
sixth in the Raye Vest/Cameron Car Corner Rocket/Cornett Mustang. Francis,
who was also the fast qualifier for the event, gained some ground on Eckert
in the 2001 UDTRA Championship battle. Francis has now closed to within
95
points of Eckert, and third-place Bloomquist is now 250 points behind
Eckert.

Polesitter Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR ran in the top five during
the
first half of the race, but faded in the second half and brought his JFR
Graphics/Monday Motorsports GRT/Russell Baker Grand Prix home in the eighth
spot.

The 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN was ninth in the
Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Custom Monte Carlo, and Ray Cook of
Brasstown, NC rounded out the top ten in the English Mountain Spring
Water/Easy Care GRT/Cornett Mustang.

McDowell wasted no time establishing himself as the man to beat, as he
took
the lead at the drop of the green flag from the outside front row starting
spot followed by Wallace, Babb, Bloomquist, and Francis. On the third lap,
Bloomquist moved up to battle Babb for third, taking the spot on lap four,
and bringing Francis with him up to fourth.

Babb came back to battle Francis for fourth on lap 6, and by lap eight,
the
top five cars were all running the high line around the 3/8-mile clay oval.
McDowell pulled out to a ten car-length lead by lap 12, as he approached
the
last cars on the lead lap. Francis passed Babb for fourth on lap 12, and
by
lap 16, Bloomquist, Francis and Babb were running three-wide for the third
spot.

Cutting through lapped traffic with surgeon-like precision, McDowell pulled
out to a full straightaway lead over Wallace by lap 20. On lap 21,
Bloomquist moved around Wallace for the second spot, and Babb passed Wallace
for third place on lap 22. Bloomquist found the high line to his liking
once he took over the second spot, while McDowell ran the low road once
he
cleared traffic.

McDowell was running in close quarters with lapped cars by lap 30, but
Bloomquist was unable to gain any ground. Not even the close call McDowell
had with Miller on lap 47 slowed him down, as he had a half-lap lead on
Bloomquist. Babb was able to get around Bloomquist for the second spot
on
lap 49, but he could no even see the leader once he took over the runner-up
spot.

Babb turned up the wick and began to chase down McDowell. By lap 60,
McDowell was up to put the tenth-place car of Cook down one lap, and Babb
closed to within a straightaway of the leader. McDowell found a line he
and
his car liked, and by lap 75, he was once again leading Babb by a half lap.

John Kaanta of Elk Mound, WI brought out the only caution flag of the race
on lap 85 when he spun the LPI Lift Systems Mastersbilt/Weisman Monte Carlo
in turn two. This put Babb right on McDowell's back bumper for the restart,
but McDowell waved bye-bye when the field went back to green. McDowell
had
a full straightway lead by lap 92.

Bloomquist showed Babb the nose of his car, as he worked the inside groove
in an effort to take over the second spot. Babb was up to the challenge,
and began to pull away from Bloomquist by lap 93. McDowell caught the tail
of the field after the restart by lap 94, and chose to ride behind those
cars, and not take a chance of wrecking with a lapped car.

Babb and Bloomquist took this opportunity to close on the leader, but
McDowell already had healthy enough advantage to take to the checkered flag.

The next event for the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series will be Wednesday night
for
a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event at the Winnebago County Speedway in
Pecatonica, IL. For ticket and race day information call (815) 239-1641.
