Path Valley Racers Beat Rain as Richwine and Brookens Romp
Spring Run, PA- Crowd pleasers Scott Richwine of Carlisle in the 358 late
models and Jimmy Brookens of Fayetteville in the 270cc Sprints romped to
wins Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway as the track outraced
persistent rainstorms. Overcoming two rain delays, the racing was completed
for all six divisions by 11:30.
"We were lucky to get the show in, but all the credit goes to the drivers
for their fast, clean racing," said Promoter Ken Geesey of Two Wheel
Promotions. "Every class raced with only one or two cautions, and that's
In the support divisions Shawn Moore of Shade Gap led all the way in the
four-cylinder thunders, George Craker of Lewisberry won for the first time
in the Legends Cars, Matt Glinski of Shermansdale won his final feature of
the year in the mini-stocks and defending champion Doug Hoffman of Newville
won the V-8 street stock feature on the last lap.
The racing action continues next weekend with the PA 305 Sprints back on the
track with the five regular Friday night divisions and a canned food drive
to aid local food banks in the pits and grandstands.
Richwine started on the pole and built up a lead of half the track and more
in his Richwine's Garage #2 late model. The guest class ran with only one
caution when Richard Walls went to the pits in lap 18, and the action was in
second where Larry Bear and Coleby Frye battled back and forth. ARCA asphalt
late model driver Tom Eriksen in the Valley Car Care #22 raced last but
thrilled the fans as he put the car onto one wheel with the front five feet
in the air time after time coming out of turn three.
"The clay was just awesome, and I could put the car anywhere I wanted," said
Richwine, who has not won at Path Valley in over two years. The front five
finishers were Richwine, Bear, Frye, Brad Kling and Tim Fedder. Frye won the
single heat race.
Jimmy Brookens drove his #11 270 Sprint to his eleventh win of the year
lapping the rear of the field up to the #11J of John Bowers. The only
caution was on lap nine when Doug Gray flattened his wing on a flip through
turn three. Butch Harrington finished a distant second, with Jeff Furlong,
Jim Callahan Jr. and Brandon Grandstaff completing the front five. The heat
race winners were Sean Good, Callahan and Brookens.
The Central PA Legends Cars win for George Craker was his first ever at Path
Valley and he beat some of the top ranked drivers in the country. Craker
started sixth and took the lead fro, Harry Garber and Butch Brough on laps
six and seven. As the second half the feature ran non-stop Craker stayed in
the high outside groove and won by about three lengths ahead of Garber. The
front five were Craker, Garber, Brough, Roger Austin Sr. and Allen Felix and
the heat winners were Craker and Brough.
Shawn Moore started on the pole and led the four-cylinder thunder cars
through four restarts to his second win of the season. Moore, Keith Walls
and Dave Ricker won the heats but Walls had to start twelfth as handicap for
winning the week before. Moore was untouchable with his wrist recovered from
a racing sprain from the week before and he said he found a faster setup for
his #97. The front five were Moore, Steve McCartney, Dave Ricker, John
Fraker and Austin Kirby and all five leaders passed a full tech inspection.
Matt Glinski also started on the pole in the modified mini stocks and he led
every lap for what will likely be his last time this season. Glinski returns
to Mansfield University of PA next week where he plays football. Barry Welch
and Arlin Brougher won the heats and Welch drew an invert eight pill to put
Glinski on the pole. The front five finishers were Glinski, Brougher, Eric
Mellott, Mark Whitsel and Jeremy Ott.
The V-8 Street Stocks put the finishing thrills on the night's fast races as
Randy Patterson took the lead from Jeff Johnson in the first half and then
gave it up on the final lap when he threw a wheel over the turn three fence.
That gave the lead and the win a lap later to Doug Hoffman who had started
seventh and passed Johnson for the second spot on lap 17. Patterson and
Shawn Whitsel won the heat races and the front five were Hoffman, Johnson,
Weston Alleman, Rich Black and Wayne Hawbaker.
