Foote makes long haul, holds on to win series race at Norton
By Mike Hughes
NORTON, Kan. (July 29)-Brian Foote made the long haul from Essex, Iowa, to Elmwood Park Speedway pay off Sunday night, as he held off a stingy Kansas trio of Randy Wilson, Doug Holzmeister and R. Alan Dix to win the 25-lap I.M.C.A. National Modified Series race on the big half-mile track.
Foote, who held the series point lead going into the event, received $1,500 for the win. Gregg Buker of North Platte, Neb., was second in series points going into the event, lost ground in the points chase with an 11th place finish.
Buker finished third in his heat race but forgot to go to the tech area following his heat and had to start last in the 24-car feature field.
Foote started on the pole, with Dix on the outside. Dix took the lead at the drop of the green, followed by third starting Wilson, Foote, Joby Hansen and Lonnie Schriner. Holzmeister, who started eighth, worked his way to fifth by lap three, and one lap later, Wilson took the lead from Dix.
The first yellow flag waved on lap 10 for a single-car spin which saw Wilson in front, followed by Dix, Foote,
Holzmeister and Hansen. Two laps later Foote took the top spot, followed by Wilson, Dix and Holzmeister.
The caution flew again on lap 14 when Chad Sterling spun in turn one. Track officials put Hansen to the back of the field on the re-start for contact with Sterling, ending his top five run. Yellow flags flew on the next two consecutive laps for single car spins, keeping the field close. The caution came out a final time on lap 19 for a three-car tangle.
Wilson took the lead with two laps to go, but Foote came right back on the following lap. The crowd was on its feet the last two laps as the top four cars diced and weaved, running nose-to-tail and three-wide on a couple of occasions.
When flagman Terry Goscha waved the checkered flag, it was Foote, Wilson, Holzmeister and Dix in a very close finish. Pat Bedore had a good run to finish fifth.
Foote had finished sixth, 12th and 10th in his first three series outings. His victory at Norton came in the 10th of 25 scheduled races. The next event is this weekend at West Plains, Mo., Motor Speedway.
The I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds also ran a full show on Saturday night, with Holzmeister holding off Dix for the $500 win.
