Satterlee scores again at Challenger

Indiana, PA (July 28) - Dave Satterlee from Rochester Mills, PA scored his fourth feature victory of the season in the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on Saturday night at Challenger Raceway. The division point leader padded his point lead, as the key to the victory was avoiding a first lap incident. Other winners on the night of racing sponsored by Notto's Golden Pheasant Inn included Jim Dandy, Jr. from Niles, OH in the Townsend Gas & Oil Modifieds. Chris Schneider from Tarentum, PA was the winner in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stocks, and Bill Sigafoes from Blairsville, PA won the North East Locators Strictly Stocks main event.

Gary Lyle and Chuck Kennedy led the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on the starting grid. At the drop of the green, the two would make contact in turn one resulting in Lyle spinning sideways. The starting field was pinned behind trying to make evasive action, as the resulting tangle would involve 11 of the 18 cars in the starting field. Not much of the damage was major though, as only Paul Domenick would be eliminated. Sixth starting Dave Satterlee would be the first car after Kennedy to make it through the incident, and would restart outside Kennedy on the restart. Taking the lead at the green flag, Satterlee took command as yellow returned on lap 2. An extended green period would be next, as Satterlee moved to the high side of the track and started to build up a lead. Kennedy still rode in second, but would feel a challenge from John Flinner as the halfway mark approached. The race would continue this way until a lap 21 caution flag closed up the field a final time. Satterlee would race home as the winner for his fourth victory of the season, as he extended his division point lead. Flinner worked his way to past Kennedy at the white flag, and secured runner-up honors. Kennedy was third for his best finish of the season. Battling for the entire second half of the event, Rodney Phillips nosed Sammy Stile for fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Wally Fox, Tony Burke, Nick Jones, Lyle, and Dave Norton. Heat race winners were Stile and Kennedy.

The 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature had Bob Rougeaux and Butch Lambert leading the field to the green flag. They would battle for the lead in the early laps, as two and three wide racing was the order of the day as drivers tried to race their way to the front of the field. Rougeaux led the first lap, as Lambert gained command before a lap 2 restart. Lambert led lap 3, as Rougeaux regained it on lap 4. Jeff Taylor advanced from eighth starting position to get second at this point, as the race for the lead heated up after a lap 5 restart. Taylor moved by Rougeaux for the top spot on lap 7, as 12th starting Jim Dandy, Jr. joined the lead battle a lap later. As the halfway mark approached, the Taylor and Dandy raced side-by-side, exchanging the lead each lap. Dandy led after a lap 11 restart, but Taylor regained it on a lap 12 restart. When a lap 13 yellow was the final one of the event, Taylor led before Dandy passed again on lap 14. Dandy would take the lead for good at this point, securing his first victory of the season. It was the third victory for the car, as Chad McClellan had won two events before joining the Armed Forces in Korea. Taylor held off Chuck Kennedy for second as he continues to lead the point chase. Rougeaux was fourth, with Bob Skwara fifth. Heat winners were Dandy and Kennedy.

The 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature started with John Hartman and Nick Reges on the front row, as Reges took command at the drop of the green flag. Reges was strong in front of the field, showing the way for the first half of the race. Chris Schneider advanced from fifth starting position to challenge, and made the pass off of turn four to take command on lap 9. Schneider pulled to a comfortable lead before a yellow flag waved on the final lap. When track rules dictated a two-lap race to the finish, an extra lap was added to the event. With the field now on Schneider's back bumper, it did not matter as he raced to his third feature victory of the season. Point leader Jeff Walters advanced from ninth starting position to finish second, as Butch Lambert came from 12th to finish third. Reges came home fourth, with fifth going to Mike Hilla, Jr. Rob Kosecki and Schneider were the heat winners.

Bill Sigafoes was the winner in the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks. Taking the lead at the start, Sigafoes led the entire distance in picking up his first victory of the season, becoming the seventh different winner this season. John Mazey retained his point lead with his runner-up finish. Heat race winner Mark Marian was third, with Tom Taylor fourth. Bill Hebenthal raced home fifth.
