SCOTT BLOOMQUIST WINS AND CLINT SMITH INJURED AT ROME
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ROME, GA - Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN took the lead on lap 14 from
Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA and went on to win the United Dirt Track
Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series 50-lap main event Sunday night at
The $10,000 victory was the seventh of the season for the defending and
four-time UDTRA champion driving the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom
Mustang, and his 84th career victory.
Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN finished second in the J&J Steel Barry
Wright/Clements Grand Prix. Johnson was able to close on Bloomquist in
lapped traffic, but Bloomquist could pull away on restarts after caution
The event was delayed on two different occasions by serious accidents and
ended during the wee hours of Monday morning. The 1993 UDTRA Champion Clint
Smith of Senoia, GA was injured in a second heat race crash after the
throttle stuck on his Turkey Creek Snacks GRT/Race Tech Mustang.
Smith's car spun to the inside of the track coming off the fourth turn,
hit the inside wall with the right side of the car. Smith, who was briefly
knocked unconscious, was extricated from the car by the Floyd County EMS
Rescue Squad. Smith regained consciousness and was then transported to
Smith suffered a broken cheekbone, a broken nose, and was released from
General Hospital on Monday afternoon.
An accident during one of the local division races sent a car airborne
took out about 50-feet of wheel fencing on the front straightaway. Despite
fire that broke out on the damaged race car after the accident, the driver
escaped injury, and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Rome Speedway and UDTRA officials were assisted by ABC Fence Company and
replaced the fence so the action could continue on the race track.
"With everything that has happened tonight, I know myself and the rest of
the drivers appreciate the fans sticking around to see the race," Bloomquist
said. "We also appreciate all of the work the Rome Speedway officials did
to keep the show going, and taking care of the race track."
Bloomquist came back from a disastrous night on Saturday at Dixie Speedway
where he had to use a provisional to make the show.
"We were trying out a new car, and the track there wasn't really in good
enough shape to race on, so we went out and tried some different things,"
Bloomquist said. "The car was good tonight, but we probably cut the tires
up a little too much, and Ronnie could catch us on long green flag runs.
could run pretty hard after the restarts."
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR finished third in the JFR Graphics/Monday
Motorsports GRT/Russell Baker Grand Prix, and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee,
brought the Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo home
in the fourth spot.
Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR drove the UniFirst Uniforms GRT/Cornett Mustang
from the 16th starting position to finish fifth. Frye was the JE Pistons
Hard Charger of the Race.
McDowell started the Larry Shaw Race Cars Larry Shaw/Hatfield Grand prix
from the pole position and led Bloomquist for the first 14 laps of the race.
McDowell got caught behind Randy Korte of Highland, IL trying to lap him,
enabling Bloomquist to scoot underneath coming off the fourth turn to take
Korte brought out the caution flag on lap 15 with a flat tire, and during
the caution, McDowell also had a tire go down, sending him to pits for a
change of rubber, and to the tail of the field for the restart. McDowell
rallied back to finish in the sixth spot.
Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC ran in the top five for most of the race,
but faded in the closing laps to finish seventh in the Biscotti's Restaurant
and Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime Monte Carlo. Steve Francis of Ashland,
KY took the eighth spot in the Valvoline/Mopar Performance Rocket/Stanton
Intrepid, after recovering from a mid-race flat tire.
Francis closed to within 99 points of UDTRA point leader Rick Eckert of
York, PA in the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series Championship standings. Eckert
dropped out of competition under caution on lap 15 with a mechanical problem
on his Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Mustang.
Eckert was running fourth on lap four when he bounced off the backstretch
wall several times. Eckert stayed in the throttle and kept pace with
leaders, and moved up to third spot when McDowell pitted. It was the first
laps of competition that Eckert has missed in the first 32 events of the
2001 UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series season.
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC rallied from the 18th starting spot to finish
ninth in the English Spring Water/Easy Care GRT/Cornett Mustang, and the
Renegade Transporters/Polaris ATVs 15-lap Consolation Race winner Earl
Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL started 17th and finished tenth in the
Dunn-Benson Ford/Lucas Oil Rocket/Eatmon Mustang.
McDowell and Bloomquist raced side-by-side at the drop of the green flag
start the race, but a turn two tangle involving Schlieper, Billy Ogle Jr.
Knoxville, TN, and UDTRA Rookie of the Year point leader Joe Izzo of
Chicago, IL necessitated a complete restart. On the restart, McDowell took
the lead over Bloomquist, who started on the outside of the front row.
Bloomquist began looking to the inside of McDowell by lap four, and the
duo began to encounter the cars on the tail of the lead lap by the tenth
lap. Bloomquist made the inside work to take the lead on lap 14 when
McDowell caught behind Korte. Korte's flat tire on his Mid-Continental
Larry Shaw/Pro Power Monte Carlo brought out the second caution flag on
Bloomquist led the formation for the restart followed by McDowell, Johnson,
Eckert, Chupp, Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI, Wallace, Ogle, Schlieper,
Francis, and Frye. McDowell's tire went down under caution sending him
Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA hit the second turn wall on lap 16 with
Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket/Pro Power Grand Prix to bring out the third
caution flag. Under this caution was when Eckert fell out of competition.
After the restart, Bloomquist pulled out to a half straightaway lead over
Johnson, but after a few laps, Johnson began to close the gap.
Francis was running seventh when he brought out the fourth caution flag
a flat tire. Bloomquist pulled away on the restart from Johnson, followed
by Chupp, Mars, Wallace, Schlieper, Frye, John Anderson of Omaha, NE in
Gerdes Racing GRT/Hatfield Grand Prix, Ogle and Cook.
Mars brought out the fifth caution flag on lap 39 when he stalled while
battling Chupp for the third spot after breaking a J-Bar on the Parker Store
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. After the restart, Wallace worked around
Chupp for the third spot. Bill Reed of Knoxville, TN brought out the final
caution flag on lap 45 when he lost the driveshaft on his UPS/Die Cast
Digest Fast/Clements Monte Carlo.
Ogle was the fast qualifier among the 44 entrants driving the Warrior Race
Cars "house car." Ogle turned the ½-mile high-banked clay oval in 14.141
seconds for an average speed of 127.289 miles per hour. McDowell,
Bloomquist, and Johnson won the first three 10-lap Borla Performance Heat
Races. Eckert picked up the JE Pistons $100 Bonus Award with a fourth heat
The next event for the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series will be the $20,000-to-win

KY. For ticket information call Florence Speedway at (859) 493-0034, or
