Kennedy tops York Series at Challenger

Indiana, PA (July 21) - The Triathlon Racing Series York Modifieds joined the Townsend Gas & Oil Modifieds to headline the Saturday night racing program at the Challenger Raceway. Taking the victory in the 25-lap main event was Chuck Kennedy from Mars, PA for his fourth feature victory of the season.

Other winners as a part of Stewart Bus Line Night were Rob Kosecki and Tom Taylor. Kosecki from Leechburg, PA was the feature winner Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature for the third time in 2001. Taylor from Homer City, PA picked up his initial victory in the North East Locators Strictly Stock feature.

The 25-lap feature for the Townsend Gas & Oil Modifieds and the Triathlon Racing Series York Modifieds started with Jim Dandy, Jr. and Chuck Kennedy on the front row, and they raced lap 1 side-by-side. Kennedy was ahead by inches at the line, and would lead after a lap 1 yellow flag period. Kennedy kept command through lap 3, when Dandy spun out to bring out a caution. After the final yellow of the event waved on lap 5, the twenty-lap run to the finish would see Kennedy feel a mid-race challenge from Ken Herman as the leaders battled their way through race traffic. Kennedy made the correct moves in the traffic to increase his advantage, one that he would hold to the finish to gain his fourth Challenger victory of the season. Herman had a strong run to finish second. Defending Challenger and York Series champion Jeff Taylor was third, as Russ Dunn finished fourth. After going to the tail after his spin on lap 3, Dandy raced back through the field to finish fifth. Fred Bratchie was sixth, as York Series point leader Todd Roncaglione, Jeff Rudrick, Carl McKinney, and Ron Roncaglione completed the top ten. With 43 cars in the pit area, preliminary action saw qualifying heat race wins go to Dandy, Herman, Kennedy, Rudrick, Jim Frontz, and Taylor. The Dash winner was Kennedy, and the Last Chance Race winner was Rich Logan. B-Main wins went to Bob Rougeaux and Kenny Hall.

The 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature started with Jason Fosnaught and Rob Kosecki leading the field to the green flag, with Kosecki taking command from the start. Nick Reges moved to second with Kosecki lengthening his lead at the point. Between caution periods on laps 6 and 9, Jeff Walters moved into second place. Kosecki would lead the remaining distance to secure the victory for the third time in 2001. Walters challenged for the lead over the final laps but settled for a close second, as he will remain the division point leader. Tommy Dembowski celebrated his birthday with his best finish of the season in third place. Fourth place finisher Randy Caldwell also notched his best season finish. Jeff Enos was fifth. Walters and Butch Lambert were the heat race victors.

Tom Taylor raced to his first victory in the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks. From the pole position, Taylor had the best working car on this night as he controlled the entire distance, breaking away from the field after the two race restarts. John Mazey raced home second and regained the division point lead. Don Rodgers was third ahead of Joe Starcher, and Bill Hebenthal. The heat race winner was Mark Marian.

Challenger Raceway will jump right back into action on Sunday night, July 22, for the running of the monthly "Sunday Night Special." The Late Models may have had Saturday off, but they will be ready to go on Sunday, as the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series Late Models will make their second visit of the season. The Stewart Bus Line Pure Stocks will be a part of the program as well, as it will be a regular point race in addition to a Stewart Bus Line Super Series race. The gates for all racing programs open at 5:30, with racing starting at 7:30. Challenger Raceway is located 6.4 miles southwest of US 422 on PA 286, then one mile north on McIntyre Road.
