As Santa Claus watches, Blair tops the topless race at Raceway 7

Conneaut, OH (July 20) - A special guest was on hand for the races this evening, making the long trip from the North Pole. Santa Claus was on hand as a part of Coca Cola Christmas in July night on Friday night at Raceway 7. And with the reindeer at home because they don't like the noise, Santa even joined the competition as he raced a school bus at the end of the program.

The Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Models ran the Fourth Annual "Topless Challenge," where all of the drivers take the roofs off of their cars. Winning the Fourth Annual event was Rob Blair from Titusville, PA. Blair also won last year's edition, but this was his first victory of the season. Santa also gave presents in the form of feature wins to Jay Watson from Conneaut, OH in the Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Models, Brent Rhebergen from Clymer, NY in the MHC Inc. E-Mods, and Mike Hochschild from Ashtabula, OH in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks.

The 25-lap "Topless Challenge" for the Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Models started with Bruce Hordusky and Ryan Markham atop the starting grid, as Hordusky took the lead at the start. On a lap 2 restart, Markham used the outside groove to take the lead with an outside pass in turn two. **** Barton moved up to challenge Markham between caution periods, as the race turned exciting following a lap 11 restart. The lead battle would now be intense, as Rob Blair and Jim Dandy, Jr. would make it a four-car war for the top spot. Markham would hold off all challenges, but eleventh starting Blair would nose ahead at the line as lap 16 was scored. A yellow flag on that lap would set up Blair as the leader on the restart. Once in front, the defending track champion would not be denied, as he would race home to score his first victory of the season. As the race for second had continued, Markham would finally secure runner-up honors. By inches at the checkered flag, Dandy nosed Barton for the third spot. Brent Rhebergen would race home fifth. After starting at the very tail of the 27-car starting field, Scott Brady charged through the field to finish sixth, as Mark Osburn, Rich Gardner, Rick Isadore, and Ward Schell rounded out the top ten. The heat race winners were Kevin Santee, Matt Urban, and Bruce Hordusky.

Santa Claus gave a big present to Jay Watson in the 20-lap feature for the Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Models. Mark Ashcraft and Jim Dandy, Jr. had started from the front row, with Dandy gaining command at the start. Dave Hess Jr. had challenged through the early laps, but Dandy had extended his lead as the race neared the halfway mark. The final yellow flag of the event would be on lap 9, and it would be notable. The flag was thrown for former point leader Doug Eck, who stopped with problems that knocked him from the race. During the caution period, Dandy would suffer problems that forced him out of the event. Hess would inherit the lead at this point, as ninth starting Watson was up to challenge in the closing laps. Hess held off the challenges to take the apparent victory, but he would be disqualified for being light at the scales. Watson would inherit the victory for his fifth feature win of the season, and he also took the division point lead. Chris Brockway would advance to finish second, ahead of Tom Bonanno, Steve Hollabaugh, and Bryan Emory. Watson and Hollabaugh were heat race winners.

Mike Potosky and Steve Artrip led the 20-lap MHC Inc. E-Mod feature to the start with Potosky taking command. A lap 2 tangle involved Todd Roncaglione and Ron Roncaglione, and eliminated Hugo Litwiler and Kevin Decker. Potosky continued to show the way, as sixth starting Brent Rhebergen was up to challenge. Rhebergen made the pass on the inside of turn three to take the lead on lap 6. As Rhebergen inched away in the lead, the battle was for second as Potosky held off challenges from Mike Hess and Dale Applebee. Hess exited the race after a spin on lap 13, and Potosky's fine run would be foiled by a lap 15 spin. In the closing stages of the race, Todd Roncaglione had charged back through the field from the tail on lap 2 and tightened the battle for the lead. Holding off the stiff challenge, Rhebergen would hold on to notch his third victory of the season. Roncaglione would be forced to settle for a close second, but still remains as the division point leader. Applebee raced home third. After losing an engine in his car, Bill Watson borrowed the Andrew 72 and charged from starting position 23 to finish fourth. Also in the tangle on lap 2, Ron Roncaglione raced back through the field for fifth. Heat winners were Ron Roncaglione, Applebee, and Hess.

Jodi Woodworth and Rich Howell led the 15-lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature to the green flag, and Howell would lead the first lap as three caution periods dotted lap 1. One of these was for a Howell spin, and as the race finally resumed it was Chuck Sullivan leading lap 2. At another restart, it was eighth starting Mike Hochschild moving to the lead on lap 3. Between caution periods, the battle for the lead was a good one as point leader Hochschild fended off charges from Darrell Bossard, Sullivan, and Bossard again in the closing laps. When the ninth caution period of the event waved on lap 13, the time limit had expired and the race would be called official. Hochschild would be awarded the victory, his sixth feature win of the season. Bossard had a good run for second, with Sullivan third. Back from the tail on lap 1, Howell would shake off a run of terrible luck with a fourth place finish, his best of the season. Bruce Burlingame posted his best finish of the season in fifth. Brian Douglas, Hochschild, and Howell were heat race winners, and the Last Chance Race winner was Russell Cressley.
