Fiedler Fast In EWSC Pat Rand Memorial
Race of Champions

by Sheila Karstaedt

Plymouth, WI
July 14, 2001

KenJay Fiedler, Sheboygan Falls, won the 40 lap Pat Rand Memorial Race of Champions A-Main sponsored by Sargento. Kris

Hansen, Manitowoc, carried the black flag during the National Anthem in memory of Pat who was killed 7 years ago while racing at

Kiel's Dave Enders, piloting the car of Robert Enders, Campbellsport, jumped out to the early lead with Brian Portschy of

Oostburg taking control on lap 2. Plymouth's Dave Deicher and Hansen, who did not transfer from the B-main and drove in place of

Fred Clatt, Sheboygan Falls, got together on lap 10 bringing out the yellow flag. The restart saw Glenbeulah's Gary Laack, Fiedler,

Plymouth's Tim McMullen, and Enders chasing Portschy for the lead.

Lap 11 saw a caution for a spin by the leader Portschy. This mishap handed the lead over to Laack with Fiedler, McMullen,

Pete Ostrowski, Milwaukee, and Enders trailing behind.

By lap 20, Laack was maneuvering through lapped traffic with Fiedler closing in. The car of West Bend's Tony Wondra came to

a stop on the backstretch bringing out the caution. Laack held on to the lead on the restart followed by Fiedler, McMullen,

Enders, and Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove.

Laack and Fiedler were running wing to wing on lap 36. The lead changed hands on lap 37 with Fiedler taking over and also

taking home the checkered flag. Crossing the line behind Fiedler was Laack, Hafemann, McMullen, and Enders.

Fast time went to Cedar Grove's Ben Schmidt with a lap of 13.337 seconds and the Tuschl Septic Systems Hard Charger Award

was claimed by Hafemann.

The Winged Super Modified B-Main only saw one caution during the race. Plymouth's Tim Melis took the lead from the pole and

by lap 5 was weaving through lapped traffic. The only caution of the event was on lap 10, when the ride of Tim Warner, Malone,

stopped on the track. Melis held on to the lead on the restart being hounded by Grafton's Dennis Klumb, Paul Pokorski and Tony

Wondra, both of West Bend, and Plymouth's Bob Brion. Melis won the race ahead of Pokorski, Klumb, Wondra, and Wayne

Goetsch, Plymouth.

Richard Hed, Sheboygan Falls, took control of the 25 lap Limited Late Model feature from the drop of the green flag. The caution

flag flew on lap 1 for Plymouth's Scott Haugstad and Henry Dickmann, Sheboygan, getting tangled in turn 2. On the restart it was

Hed, Kewaskum's Chad Espen, John Scharenbroch, Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan's Dave Herr, and Rick Thompson,

Debris on the track brought out the caution on lap 4. The field was set with Hed leading Thompson, Scharenbroch, Sheboygan's

Keith Borth, and Espen. Hed was seeing lapped traffic on lap 17.

The last caution of the race came out on lap 22 when Scharenbroch's car came to a rest in turn 4. Chasing down Hed was

Thompson, Espen, Charlie Schmidt, Cedar Grove, and Plymouth's Dan Dippel. Points leader Dippel left the track on lap 23 due to

mechanical problems. Hed went to celebrate in victory lane with Espen, Thompson, Borth, and JJ Walvoord, Oostburg, finishing

after him.

After a post race inspection, Espen was found to have a major violation which disqualified him for the night. As part of the

penalty, he also loses all accumulated points from the year.

Walvoord claimed the Bob Akright Memorial Hard Charger Award and the honors of fast time with a lap of 15.592 seconds.

The Super Stock feature saw Sheboygan's Bob Duncan take the lead on lap 1 and hold on to it until the checkers flew. On lap

15 of the 20 lap feature, Duncan was making his way through lapped traffic. When the checkered flag came out, it was Duncan

taking home the win followed by Mike Plate, Newton, Brian Genske, Sheboygan Falls, Plymouth's Donny Kulow, and Steve Schad,

The WHBL Hard Charger Award and fast time went to Todd Jensema, Sheboygan Falls, with a lap of 17.121 seconds.

The Super Stock semi feature saw pole sitter Scott Landgraf, Sheboygan, pull out to an early lead until Belgium's Bob

Albinger took over on lap 2 when Landgraf spun.

The red flag came out on lap 3 when Tony Wiltzius, Sheboygan, flipped on the front stretch. Fredonia's Bill Greiveldinger brought

out the caution on lap 9 when he spun.

Crossing the stripe first was Albinger, Paul Perronne, Plymouth, Kiel's Jeremy Bushman, Brian Goetsch, Sheboygan, and

Elkhart Lake's Abe Meinert.

A record number of 15 cars took to the track for the Mighty 4's. Jeremy Sauter, Sheboygan Falls, led the pack early on. The

red flag came out on lap 2 when Jaydee Sipiorski flipped down the backstretch. The restart saw Sauter, Elkhart Lake's Scott

Baldock, Duane Dippel of Plymouth, Sheboygan's Jeremy Goetsch, and Karl Gabriesle, Oostburg, going for the lead. Sauter

found himself in lapped traffic by lap 6.

Baldock was reeling in Sauter and on lap 8 took the lead and went on to the win. Finishing behind Baldock was Sauter, Dippel,
Belgium's Rich Miske, and Tim Sauter, Plymouth.

On the slate for next Saturday night at the Sheboygan County Fair Park will be our Salute to Racing Legends. There will be a

display of vintage racing memorabilia and quite a few restored race cars on display. The night will be sponsored by Tecumseh.
