Friendship Speedway

Elkin, N.C. 28621

News Release

Story submitted by Jimmy Layell and Cynthia Allred

July 14, 2001

Saturday night's racing action at Friendship Speedway
in Elkin, NC was scheduled as a "regular" race program
with all of the weekly divisions running. However as
is often the case, there was nothing "regular" about
the slam bam action that fans witnessed from the first
heat races to the final feature.

Competition in the Semi-Modified 4 division has been
hot and heavy all season and this week was no
exception. With the front five cars running bumper to
bumper and door to door, even sometimes three-wide
through most of the feature, it was anybody's race.
Tim Wyatt and Jamie Holcomb held first and second for
much of the race but were never more than a car length
ahead of Sandy Martin and Derrick Mathis. Holcomb's
luck ran out late in the feature as mechanical
problems sent him to the pits leaving Wyatt, Mathis
and Martin battling for the win. In a last minute
effort Mathis of North Wilkesboro, NC in his Rick's
Wood & Mulch, Hollar Racing Engines Mustang, passed
Wyatt to take the lead. When Mathis opened the door
Martin went through with him to take the second spot
leaving Wyatt in third as the checkered flag came out.
Michael Sheets and Kenneth Stokes ran strong
throughout the feature to take fourth and fifth
respectively.

In the Sportsman feature event Joel Bray of
Hamptonville, NC in his Audio Unlimited, Shumate
Seamless Guttering Monte Carlo held off a determined
Grayland Wagoner to take down the win. Wagoner held on
to take second place with Ken Church, having his
strongest run of the season, taking third. Terry
Zachary who challenged Bray for the lead until a
mid-race spin negated him to the rear of the field,
worked his way back to finish fourth with John Stamper
taking fifth.

Terry Cardwell of Madison, NC, in his Barber
Chevrolet, G.A. Woods Grading and Hauling Monte Carlo,
after a brief absence from Friendship, returned to
take the checkers in the Late Model Feature. Keith
Holder, after challenging Cardwell early on, held on
for second. Wayne Quesinberry finished third with a
hard-charging Mike Chilton finishing fourth. Chad
Paxton, with one of his strongest runs of the year,
took fifth.

Pure Stock action had Marty Billings of Traphill, NC
in his Danny's Automotive, Cornerstone Exteriors
Camaro, taking down the feature win. Paul West, Jimmy
Grimes and Aaron Hill fought throughout the race with
West holding second until the white flag lap when West
went wide. Grimes and Hill slipped by West for second
and third place finishes with West holding on for
fourth and Steve Payne finishing fifth.

In the evening finale the Mudslinger Division took to
the track with Barney Sullivan of State Road, NC
taking down top honors. Jackie Parsons in his first
showing in this division took second, holding off
Marshall Eller who finished third. Rodney Hazelwood,
another newcomer at Friendship, was fourth with Mickey
Anderson rounding out the top five.

Friendship will be closed Saturday, July 21 for a
scheduled vacation. Racing action will resume July 28
with the gates opening at 4:00 PM and racing at 6:00
PM.
