Phillips First at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
Mansfield, OH (July 14, 2001) A perfect night for racing finally showed
the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway with clear blue sunny skies, a huge
crowd and a packed pit area.
The Coors Lite Late Models had an exciting 25 lap Feature as always, as
Columbus, Ohio's John Stroble jumped out to the early lead with Paul
Sibila right on his tail. The white #44 machine, fresh off victory last
week, with father Bob Sibila driving, was looking for Victory Lane again.
By lap 3, the Sibila machine took over the #1 spot. Meanwhile, former
points champ, Dave Wagner and 1st timer, Kenny Phillips were in hot
pursuit, dicing their way through the field. Phillips taking a night off
from his A.S.A. tour caught Sibila on lap 12. By lap 14, Phillips shot
under Sibila to take over the lead. Wagner showed why he was champion as
he too shot under Sibila right behind Phillips. As the 2 cars battled it
out for the lead, the only yellow of the race came out with 5 laps to go,
for a stalled #07 of Kenny Cantrell. As the green flag flew, the black #03
of Phillips continued to lead. Wagner tried high and low for the next four
laps, but in Victory Lane, it was Kenny Phillips in the Bill Campana
Excavating (Mentor, OH) receiving the Checkered Flag. Dave Wagner, Paul
Sibila, John Stroble And John Sanquist Jr. rounded out the top 5. Phillips
and Wagner won the Heat races.
The Ohio Modifieds saw 21 Emods show for their Mid Season Special Saturday
night event. Ron Mangus of Alexandria Ohio was top time of the night with
17.51 in his #00 Budweiser, Saeger Engines, machine. A beautiful #3 of
Bill Sauer took the lead from Steve Snapp on lap 1, but the yellow flew
just 2 laps later for a Jeff McQuillen and Mike Abramczyk spinning in turn
4. Sauer's lead was short as point leader, Roger Miller pulled under him
in turn 2 to take the top spot. With Miller leading, last weeks winner
John White was up to 2nd place by lap 9 and appeared to be closing in on
Miller. A yellow flew on lap 15 for a spun Bill Sauer, but White's #17
went to the pits. Top Qualifier, Ron Mangus was making his way to the
front fast and by lap 17, he was on Miller's bumper. Another yellow flew
on lap 19 for Mark Zickefoose. This tightened up the field with 6 laps to
go. Mangus tried inside and out for the last 6 laps, but it was Roger
Miller's Off Road & Performance #M4 being claimed the winner over Ron
Mangus, Steve Snapp, Bob Kachenko and Doug Neel. John White won the Fast
Dash, Steve Snapp and Eric Holton won the Heat races.
The Old Milwaukee Super Stocks saw point leader Dennis Kelly fly off the
backstretch into the dirt on the start of the 15 lap Feature Event. Jim
Lockwood jumped out to the lead, but not for too long as Shawn Stroble
took it away on lap 3. The next yellow flew on lap 8 as Riley Barnes and
Dan Mager tangled in turn 4. The field was tightened up, but Stroble was
the "Man of the Night" as he won the Super Stock Feature over Jim
Lockwood, Don Atwell, Dennis Kelly and Paul Howard. Mentor, Ohio's Don
Atwell won the Dash, while Wadsworth's Jim Lockwood won the Heat race.
In Pure Stock Action, Dan Hensel cleaned house by winning the Dash, Heat
and 12 lap Feature. Hensel led all 12 laps of the Feature to take the win
over Tom Costello, Bob Fry, Chet Fry and Stoney Oney.
John Bond showed why he's the point leader in Compact action this week as
he took the lead from Danny Cline on lap #2 to win the 15 lap Feature
Saturday night. Last week's winner, Mike Sheppard was 2nd, followed by Dan
Winger, Kevin Knecht and Dave Dobbins. Henry Britton won the Dash, while
Travis Knecht, John Cline and Mike Sheppard won the Heat races.
Next weeks action will be a regular event with all 5 racing divisions on
hand for another exciting night at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. July
28th will be the Christmas in July special event and SUNDAY August 5th
will Feature the Main Event Super Late Models for their 7th leg, plus Ohio
Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Compacts. Racing on Sunday August
5th will begin at 4 pm. For any further information, please visit the
