Invader Alert: Scott Randolph Test Successful Wins Cleveland

It was test n’ tune session for the Super Late Models at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night. With next weekends Southern All-Star race on the horizon, track management allowed competitors to run under S.A.S. rules in order to prep for the show next Saturday night against the regular touring series racers. Twenty-two SLM racers signed in for qualifying with visiting racer Scott Randolph of Baxter TN turning the fastest lap of the night (a 14:826) to earn the pole for the first heat race. Fifteen year-old Todd Morrow lined up against Randolph in the heat as the third fastest qualifier, but it was fifth fast qualifier, points leader David Smith trying to up-roost Randolph. As the white flag flew Smith gained passage into the lead, diving hard into turn three under Randolph. Not missing a beat Randolph put the nosed of his black and gold # 37 back under Smith to complete a near textbook slingshot move, to the checkers for the win. In the second heat it was Dewayne Smith backing up his runner-up fast qualifying lap winning the second heat with last weeks winner Randy Burrows second. Randolph and De. Smith took the green for the start of the 30 lap “A” Main feature and quickly De. Smith and Da. Smith (no relation) raced past the outside invader Randolph. Simultaneous cautions gouged the race on lap five as Kent Hicks spun his mount the same time Mike Tinker and Jake Lowry entwined on the front straight-away. On the restart things began falling apart as leader De. Smith races into turn one. With Da. Smith pressuring for the lead the duo entangle as De. Smith’s mount stalls. Randolph and fifth racing Lamar Scoggins scream by and are the only ones not caught up in a huge pile-up on the back stretch. Da. Smith inherits the lead on the restart but the damage is too heavy as Randolph, Burrows and Scoggins race by. Smith trying to nurse a battle worn racecar home to a decent finish (for points sake) inadvertently wraps-up the field in turn four one lap later. The race goes green for the next twelve laps until Kent Hicks and Eddie Benefield tie-up in turn two. Burrows looking to notch his second career SLM victory puts plenty on pressure on Randolph but as the checkers fall it’s the “J&H Construction, Hunter & Sons Construction” Stinger Chevrolet Monte Carlo on only his second time to Cleveland taking the win.
