HOT DIRT MOTORSPORTS RACING ACTION THIS SUNDAY JULY 22 ON NICE N’ EASY GROCERY SHOPPES NIGHT AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY
VERNON, NY – The summer stretch of hot DIRT Motorsports sanctioned stock car racing continues during the 40th anniversary season at Utica-Rome Speedway this Sunday July 22. In thrilling race competition on Nice N’ Easy Grocery Shoppes night will be the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots along with the always popular One on One Spectator Races. Race time at the popular half-mile track on Route 5 in Vernon is set for 6pm.
Todd Burley of Spencerport leads all drivers in the DIRT 358-Modified point standings but he has a new rival in defending track champion Ron Holmes of Oneida who is still winless on the 2001 campaign. Holmes was surely not happy with the controversial slingshot move Burley made to take the win on July 8. Burley and the legendary Jack Johnson lead all drivers in the win column with three wins apiece as the season hits the halfway point. Other drivers who have visited victory lane in the headline DIRT 358-Modified division include opening night winner J.J. Michaels as well as Danny Johnson and John Ramsey. Other top drivers looking for the huge 30-lap win this Sunday on Nice N’ Easy Night will be Mitch Gibbs, Paul Jensen, Gus Schmidt, Steve Hulsizer, Jason Barney, Ryan Baye, and Roger Phelps.
Tim Clemons, Willy Decker, and Jamie Christian are the only winners to date in the tough DIRT Sportsman division, while in the DIRT Pro Stocks, Jerry Holmes leads the way with Bret Belden, Jason Rood, and John Pietrowicz right behind in the standings. Jeff Pastorella continues to be the dominant car in the Pure Stocks, but with Dave Mannise not in competition every week, you may see a new winner in victory lane before too long. Denny Tilision continues to be the top driver in the Slingshot division.
During intermission, the entertaining One on One Spectator races will be held, and spectators, with a regular road car, pit pass, and helmet, will race another spectator around the speedway for one full lap in elimination rounds. Earlier this season, Walt Koperda Jr. won the Spectator races, which are always popular with race fans.
You can be a part of all the family fun and excitement this summer at the ultra fast Utica-Rome Speedway, a Sunday tradition in the Mohawk Valley that produces some of the most-thrilling three and four wide racing on the entire DIRT Motorsports circuit. On average, over 110 cars show up weekly for the action packed five division show, which is normally completed before 10pm to allow everyone time to go home and prepare for the week ahead.
The track is located just east of the village of Vernon on Route 5 and is easily accessible from New York State Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.
The gates this Sunday July 22 at Utica-Rome Speedway on Nice N’ Easy Grocery Shoppes Night will open at 4pm, with racing taking the green from Starter Chip Burdick at 6pm.
