King earns Winged Sprint Triple Crown, Hopkins snags second win
After struggling for the first part of the year, Shawn King is finally breathing a sigh of relief. King scored his first feature win of the year at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark in the Winged Sprint division, earning the triple crown in the process, by winning the heat race, trophy dash and feature event.
Billy Hopkins nailed down his second feature win of the year in Pure Street division while Chris Hall earned the Open-Wheel checkered and Mike Abney enjoyed victory lane in the Limited Late Models.
Former Auto Tire and Parts Racepark Winged Sprint Champion Shawn King was having a difficult beginning of the season. After struggling through the first seven races this year, King has finally got a reason to smile.
After winning the trophy dash King earned the right to start on the pole position for the nights feature event. At the start of the race King jumped out to the lead with outside front-row starter Jeff Davis in tow.
The first start was called back due to contact between Paul Hart and Robbie Standridge in turn four. Standridge continued on, Hart was unable to make repairs.
When the green flag waved once again for the restart it didnít take long before the yellow flag would wave when Indy Racing League veteran racer Jimmy Kite went spinning in turn two. Kite rejoined the field.
The sprinters took the green flag again and made one circuit around the track before Steve Zelch Jr. brought out the yellow flag with a flat tire.
The field would endure one more caution at the start of the third lap when Tommy Scott and Darrell Martin got together bringing out the final caution of the evening.
After the fourth and final caution flag it was an all King evening. King jumped right out to the lead on the start of the third lap. Jeff Davis would follow in behind him with Bobby Hawks, Andy Holden and Todd Rowland fifth. Rowland had moved up from his 14th starting position to fifth in just two short circuits.
On the fourth lap Rowland moved into fourth and three laps later he motored around Davis for third. In the mean time the 12x racer of Robbie Standridge was also working on his charge through the field. Standridge had moved into fifth at the time after being sent to the rear on the first lap after he brought out the caution flag.
Out in front, King dashed through lapped traffic with Hawks several car-lengths behind.
Standridge and Rowland swapped positions on the 12th lap.
King would continue to dominate the rest of the event leading all 25 laps picking the win on Four Seasons Night at the races.
Hawks tried desperately on the 23rd lap to make a pass for the lead but it was to no avail. The driver of the number 83 sprinter would finish second while Standridge, Rowland and Davis completed the top-five in that order.
In the Open-Wheel Modified feature event Chris Hall came away the victor winning his first race since 1997.
At the start of the race Danny Sissom jumped out to the lead and maintained the advantage for seven laps before suffering a flat tire.
Jeff Parmer then inherited the lead and kept the top position for the next two circuits before Terry Johnson made the pass for the lead. Johnson led the next seven laps when coming out of turn two his car bobbled enabling Hall to make the move for the lead.
Hall held off the charge from Johnson at the line earning his first career checkers at the racepark. Johnson finished second, Gary Geiler third, Mark Warren fourth and Perry Beier fifth.
Billy Hopkins scored his second Pure Street win in a row dominating the entire caution filled event. Cline Myers Jr. finished second, Ron Lacy was third.
In Limited Late Model action it was Mike Abney scoring the win with Henry Nash and Terry James completing the top-three.
Next weekend regular racing action resumes on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon Moto-Music Madness invades the racepark with high flying free style motocross action.
