TREMONT BAKES FIELD, LOWE, AND YETMAN RISE TO THE OCCASION

July 7, 2001
West Lebanon, NY-West Sand Lake's Kenny Tremont captured his fifth win of the
season in the modified feature at Lebanon Valley Saturday night. Andy
Bachetti won the 24-lap 358-modified feature and Sparky Lowe came home
victorious in the 20-lap sportsman feature. The 20-lap Pro Stock main went to
Rob Yetman for the second time this season. FREIHOFER BAKING COMPANY, PRO
CIRCUIT AUTOSPORTS & RESTORATION and FUNPLEX FUNPARK were the night's
sponsors.
Chip Mitchell and Chris Moore led the modifieds to the green flag. Moore
got the jump early and would lead the first eight laps of the race. Three
wide racing led to problems for Eddie Marshall on lap three as he was sent
into the turn two wall. Dickie Larkin was charging to the front early as he
took third from Jason Goff on lap four. J.R. Heffner was making his move to
the front as he took over fifth on lap six and Larkin moved in to second on
lap seven. Tremont started the race from the 15th spot and by lap seven was
already up to fourth. Dave Mosher got turned around in turn four on lap
eight. Larkin made his bid for the lead on the next lap and took it going
into turn one. His car pushed a little forcing Moore to check up and that
allowed Tremont to get around the both of them for the lead. Rich Ricci Jr.
was making headway and cracked the top five at the halfway mark.
Tremont quickly motored away from the rest of the field and opened up a
half-track lead by the end of the race. Heavy lapped traffic plagued the top
runners in the final stages, but it did not allow anyone to close in on
Tremont. Larkin drifted high in turn four on lap 22, but was able to hold on
to the runner-up position. Heffner moved into the third position on lap 21
and would finish the race in that spot. Ricci finished the race in fourth and
Tim Dwyer rounded out the top five. It was Tremont's 92nd career victory at
the Valley.
Andy Bachetti finished the I LOVE NY 358-Modified Championship second
behind Tony Stewart last Thursday night and he was looking to improve on that
finish by one. He would do just that on Saturday night. Bachetti took the
lead from Todd Wilkinson at the halfway point of the race and walked away
from the pack. The only caution flag of the race came on lap 17 when J.R.
Heffner spun to avoid another hitting another car. This allowed the field to
bunch back up for a restart, but Bachetti was able to motor away once again.
Tremont was able to get up to second on lap 20, but could not run down
Bachetti. Wilkinson came home third, Ricci was fourth and Larkin rounded out
the top five.
The sportsman feature had several early incidents that really slowed the
pace of the event. Four cautions by lap three forced speedway officials to
make the next restart single file. Sparky Lowe would emerge from the pack to
take the lead on the lap three restart with Joe Bennett in tow. Paul
Gagliardi was running a strong third when fluid poured out from his car. He
came to a rest on the backstretch as the field beared down on his disabled
car. Ted Teal tagged the front end of the car but everyone was able to avoid
serious contact.
While under the caution to clean up that incident a brief rain shower hit
the track. It looked like for the second week in a row the sportsman feature
would be called prematurely. But the rain dissipated as quickly as it
appeared and the race was able to go to the end. Going into the race Art
Collins and Roy Bridge were tied for the point lead. Collins was involved in
a couple of the early incidents, but was able to continue each time. Bridge
would suffer mechanical problems on lap 12 and ran around the inside of the
track for the remainder of the race. No one could challenge Lowe on this
night and he took home his second win of the season. Bennett had a career
best finish in second, Bobby Knipe was third, Hawley Smith fourth and Don
Miller finished fifth. Lowe was able to wrestle the point lead away from
Collins and Bridge as a result of his victory.
The Pro Stocks were running for another $400 bonus Saturday night thanks
this week to the folks at Capital Speed Equipment. Dave Striebel was the
early race leader in the 20-lap main. Al Blackburn got turned around in turn
two while running second. Adam Haas made contact and Haas was done for the
night. Rob Yetman moved into second on the restart and quickly took the lead
on lap three. Yetman, Danny Sanchez and Bob Duzlak had pulled away from the
rest of the pack by lap seven. Last week's winner, Ricky Duzlak, retied from
the event at the halfway point of the event. Streibel's top five run ended on
lap ten as well as he went pitside with overheating problems. Dan Burl saw a
sixth place finish ruined as he dropped from the race on lap 18. Yetman held
off all challengers on this night and captured his second win of the season.
Sanchez was second, Bob Duzlak third, Tom Brandt fourth and Jim Lagenback
rounded out the top five.
John Denue won the pure stock "B" feature held over from last week. Josh
Brandt won the pure stock "A". Fran Marchand won the pure stock "B" for this
week. Wally Engel won the "C" and Pete Wiegand won the "D". Scott Kilmer won
