Dirt track fans had a special treat Saturday night at Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC with a Semi-Modified 4 feature and two 50 Lap Enduro Races. An Enduro race consists of completely stock cars, front or rear wheel drive, carburetion or fuel injection, with green flag non-stop action. A caution is brought out only if the track is completely blocked or a driver is in harm’s way.

After a brief rain delay, Semi-Modified 4 action went into its regular crowd-pleasing mode with several fan favorite drivers in hot contention for the win. Derrick Mathis took the early lead only to go wide on the fourth lap of competition, allowing Junior Welborn of Wilkesboro, NC in his Mary’s Restaurant, Hollar Racing Engines Ford Mustang, to take the lead. Jamie Holcomb stayed nose to tail with Welborn throughout the feature, finishing second. Mathis held off a determined Sandy Martin to finish third with Martin in fourth. Steve Faw came from a sixth row starting position to finish fifth.

The Gwyn Family of Mount Airy, NC made the twin Enduros a real family affair as Kevin Gwyn lapped the field to win the first Enduro. Gwyn in a Nissan Sentra proved to many skeptics that a front wheel drive, four-cylinder car could not only finish but also take home the victory. Dale Brown with a strong run for second held off Gwyn’s brother, Kenny Gwyn who took third place honors.

After already driving in the Semi-Modified 4 Feature, Tim Wyatt of Millers Creek, NC climbed behind the wheel of his Enduro car to set the pace for the second Enduro Feature of the evening. Wyatt in his Ford Crown Victoria held off another determined member of the Gwyn family, to take the win. Woodrow Gwyn, Kevin and Kenny’s father, dogged Wyatt to the finish line taking second place honors with Tim Hall finishing third.

Next week’s Friendship action will feature the Carolina Clash Super Late Models, Semi-Modified 4 and Sportsman divisions. The gates will open at 4:00 PM with racing starting at 6:00 PM.
