Dewayne Smith’s Wins Suzuki: Stars N’ Stripes Event
A lot of changes have taken place over the course of a season, for Dewayne Smith and Cleveland Speedway, but one thing that remains the same is the route to Cleveland Speedway’s victory lane. After a heart wrenching defeat last Saturday night, Smith returned with a vengeance to earn his first season victory in the special “Trotter Suzuki” sponsored 30 Lap Stars’ N’ Stripes Super Late Model “A” Main race. In qualifying Smith set the mark early turning a 14:405 second lap around the track. Smith would be flank in qualifying by his former race teams mount piloted this year by Jake Lowry. Andy Dill, Kent Hicks and last weeks winner Mike Tinker rounded out the top five qualifiers. Smith raced to the win in the first heat subsequently earning the pole for the feature. Lowry could fend off outside pole sitter Hicks in the second heat for the outside front row feature starting position. Race fans were treated to fireworks prior to the field taking the green for the “A” Main race. Hicks jumped into the lead but tt was Smith time to shine and the “Yellow and Black Attack” # 21 raced by on the bottom of the track for the lead. Rookie Carroll Cate reared a yellow flag slowing the field on lap 10. Lowry and Lamar Scoggins jumped to the outside starting eighth & tenth respectfully to try an pass by the bottom groove. Lowry was able to get as high as fourth as Scoggins ended his run prematurely. Hicks and Dill waged a sheet metal war for second, leaning on each other lap after lap for position. As the checkers flew for Smith in his “Car City, Coe’s Towing, Tri-State Appraisers” sponsored racecar, Randy Burrows fought back by Lowry for a fourth place finish. Hicks followed Smith with Dill in third.
