posted July 01, 2001 04:45 PM MITCH SMITH MEMORIAL TO LANCE DEWEASE Lance Dewease drove around Keith Kauffman on the 22nd lap and went on to win the Mitch Smith Memorial for sprint cars Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway and became the fifth different winner in five Pennsylvania Speedweek races. Dewease started alongside Kauffman on the front row of the 30-lap test, but the 51-year old veteran beat him into the first corner and led a wild romp through lapped traffic in a race slowed by caution only once when Greg Hodnett spun on the second lap. After Dewease took the lead exiting the fourth corner eight laps from the finish Kauffman stayed within striking distance, but had to settle for second place and a $4000 payday. Dewease took home the lucrative $10,000 winner's check for his 46th career Williams Grove Speedway win. Dewease became the first driver to win four main events at the Grove this year.
