BLOOMQUIST WINS, BUT MISSES THE BEST RACING OF THE NIGHT
NORTH VERNON, IN - Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN took his sixth United
Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series win of the season Saturday
night at Twin Cities Raceway Park. Bloomquist dominated by leading all
laps of the main event, and in doing so, missed the best racing of the night
Behind Bloomquist's Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom Mustang were
several position changes throughout the top ten, as several drivers made
advances from the back of the pack going two and three wide all race long
front of a packed house.
Bloomquist was never challenged after starting on the pole position, a
the defending and four-time UDTRA champion inherited.
Scott Performance Wire 1st heat race winner UDTRA point leader Rick Eckert
of York, PA damaged the engine in his Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Mustang and
had to start 17th after going to a back up car. Bloomquist won the JE
Pistons 3rd heat race, and moved up to the pole after Eckert dropped back.
"Bob Pierce was strong last night, so we looked at what tires he was
running, and that made a difference for us tonight," Bloomquist said. "As
long as we could keep our left rear tire bolted down in the brown dirt on
the inside, we could run strong."
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC finished in the second spot giving American Race
Tire its best finish of the season on his English Mountain Spring Water
GRT/Cornett Mustang. Cook had company all night long from Steve Boley of
West Liberty, IA in the first part of the race, and Darrell Lanigan of
Union, KY at the end.
Lanigan ended up in third driving the Lanigan Motorsports Rocket/Cornett
Mustang, giving Ford a top three sweep in the 75-lap main event.
Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL was the JE Pistons Hard Charger of the Race
blasting from his 18th starting spot to finish fourth in the Murphy Trucking
Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo. It was the fourth top five finish for the
ll Cool One in six UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series starts this season.
Eckert showed why he is the point leader, as he brought his back-up car
from the 17th starting spot to finish fifth. Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee,
ran in the top five right up against the wall for the majority of the race,
but faded late and finished sixth in the Performance Roofing Systems
Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Steve Francis of Ashland, KY came back from an early race spin to finish
seventh in the Valvoline/Mopar Performance Rocket/Stanton Dodge. Francis
now trails Eckert by 141 points in the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series points
chase, while third place Bloomquist closed to within 281 points of Eckert
the halfway point in the season.
The 1999 UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA won the Renegade
Transporters/Polaris ATVs 10-lap Consolation Race, started the main event
from the 19th starting spot, and finished eighth in the Larry Shaw Race
Larry Shaw/Hatfield Grand Prix. McDowell was challenging for fourth spot
late in the race, but faded in the closing laps.
John Gill of Mitchell, IN took the ninth spot in the Elrod Grain Service
Rocket/Race Tech Monte Carlo, and Steve Barnett of Franklin, IN rounded
the top ten in the J.D. Byrider GRT/K-Motion Monte Carlo.
Bloomquist shot into the lead at the drop of the green flag followed by
2nd Borla Performance 10-lap heat race winner Boley in the Ron Alpen Ford
Mastersbilt/Cornett Mustang, Cook, Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV in the
Simonton Windows Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo, and Schlieper.
Lanigan stepped to the outside groove on lap three and passed Schlieper
Cook to take the fourth spot while Shaver moved up to third spot. By the
fifth lap, Bloomquist had a 12 car-length lead on Boley, who was being
challenged by Shaver for second. Francis spun in turn one on lap ten and
collected Pierce to bring out the first of six caution flags.
The caution flag erased a full straightaway lead Bloomquist enjoyed over
Boley and Shaver. On the restart, Lanigan jumped the cushion in turn one,
falling back to the seventh spot, as Cook, Schlieper and Barnett got by.
Bloomquist didn't waste any time pulling away from the field, as he had
car length advantage once again by lap 14.
There was some intense racing going on from fifth spot on back through
after the restart. The second caution flag came out on lap 16 when UDTRA
Rookie of the Year point leader Joe Izzo of LaSalle, IL spun his Jeff's
Engine Masters GRT/Pro Power Monte Carlo in turn three after tangling with
Pierce down the backstretch while battling for the tenth spot.
The hard racing continued on lap 17 when Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN
brought out the caution flag in turn three with a spin in his Sheppard
Excavating Rocket/Pro Power Monte Carlo. James tangled with Jimmy Mars
Elk Mound, WI in the Parker Store Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo while
battling for the eighth spot.
The restart saw Bloomquist pull away, but behind him, Boley, Shaver and
Cook began a three-wide battle for the second spot. After a couple of laps,
Shaver dropped back to fourth while Boley and Cook ran side-by-side. Davey
Johnson brought out a caution flag on lap 21 with a cut down tire on his
Rocket Chassis Monte Carlo.
While Bloomquist pulled away on the restart, Boley and Cook resumed their
side-by-side battle for second, followed by Schlieper, Shaver, Barnett,
Pierce, Lanigan, Mars, and Eckert. The UDTRA point leader was on the move,
as he was up to the eighth spot by lap 24. James stalled in turn four on
lap 28 to turn on the caution light for the fifth time in the race.
Boley and Cook went right back to their wheel-to-wheel battle for second
the restart, while Lanigan raced his way back up into the top five, and
passed Schlieper for fourth on lap 29. Lanigan then made it a three-way
battle for second on lap 30 when Boley hit the fence causing damage to the
front of his car, and he went to the pits under green.
Pierce was on the move on the inside groove of the track moving up to sixth
spot on lap 32, fifth by lap 38, and fourth by lap 41. Pierce and Schlieper
waged a tight battle for fourth spot for several laps with Pierce running
the bottom and Schlieper running right against the outside wall.
By the halfway point in the race, Bloomquist was checking out, Cook and
Lanigan battled for second, with Pierce and Schlieper racing for fourth.
Eckert had moved up to sixth, with McDowell in seventh, Francis moved back
up to eighth, while Shaver faded to the ninth spot, and Gill ran in the
The final caution flag was unfurled on lap 45 when Terry Eaglin stalled
the front stretch. By lap 53, Bloomquist had a full straightaway lead over
Cook and Lanigan, still running side-by-side for second. Lap 60 saw Pierce,
Schlieper and McDowell right behind Cook and Lanigan racing for the fourth
Pierce pulled away from Schlieper and McDowell by lap 65, and was closing
Cook and Lanigan by lap 68. Eckert rallied in the last ten laps of the
up into the top five, while Schlieper and McDowell dropped back to sixth
Shaver was the fast qualifier among the 30-car field with a lap around the
3/8-mile dirt oval in 14.514 seconds for an average speed of 93.014 miles
per hour. Shaver was the first qualifier, and turned in the time in his
first of two laps. Twin Cities Raceway Park officials worked around the
clock after the Friday night UDTRA event to get the track multi-grooved
over a second faster.
The next event on the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series schedule will be this Tuesday
night at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, OH for a 50-lap
$10,000-to-win main event.
