King and Hull Return to Malden Victory Lane

Malden Speedway

June 22, 2001

David & Sara Darnell

Greg King led from green to checker to take his fifth Late Model win of the year at Malden, while Larry Hull fought through and around traffic to take the Modified feature. Doug Moore continues to dominate Super Street with his 7th win in 10 weeks of points racing. Jared Wagster is almost as dominating in Pure Street with his fourth straight win. Darrell Ham and Scott Austin picked up their third Cruiser win of the year.

Greg King followed Scott Tracer all the way during the Late Model heat race Friday, but took no chances in the Feature. King got an excellent start and grabbed the lead into turn one to open the race and never looked back. Tracer fell in behind King, but had to battle with Keith Getson to hold the second spot. Getson grabbed the second for a short time after a lap five restart, but Tracer took it back a lap later. Tracer caught up to King and was able to pull even diving into the curves on lap 17 and 18, but King was too quick coming out of the turns for Tracer to complete the pass. As the leaders took the white flag, there was intense racing for position in the pack. Larry Hillis got tangled going into turn one and went violently off the end, flipping the car sideways several times. Hillis was able to walk away, dazed but with a smile as he looked back at the crumpled 29 Dodge. No positions were swapped in the final green-white-checkered dash to the finish. Terrill Sentell picked up fourth in his first return to the Speedway this year. Scott Gibbs raced to fifth. Tracer maintains a slim 6-point lead over both King and Getson, tied for second. Gibbs is only 20 back in fourth.

Larry Hull picked up his second Modified victory of the year as he was the final and strongest challenger to early leader Claudie Cook. Cook jumped to the lead from the pole position and faced several challengers. Jess Short took over second on lap five and was pulling even with Cook a lap later. Cook held on and track newcomer Eric Hickerson gave it a shot. Cook met his challenge also. All this time Hull was getting faster as the laps ticked away. He found a fast spot high on the track, and started picking off a position at a time. On lap 9 he took third from Short. He took second from Hickerson down the front straight on lap 13 after a full lap of side-by-side action. Three laps later he challenged Cook but had to fall back as Cook successfully blocked his move down the back straight. Hull regained his momentum and used a swing high-dive low move on lap 17 to take the lead and pulled away to victory. Hickerson chased Cook down a lap later to grab second. Robby Arnold just nosed out Short at the finish line to grab fourth. The race went caution free the final 17 laps, with the leaders never reaching lapped traffic in the very competitive 19 car field. Cook, Short, and Hull won the heat races. Cook holds a 32-point bulge over Hull in the season standings after 10 weeks of racing.

Doug Moore grabbed the lead of the Super Street feature from the outside front row and was never challenged. Moore led all fifteen laps for his fifth feature win in a row, holding a 3.2 second lead at the finish over second place Paul Keena. Keena took second from John Stephens on lap 8, but was never able to close the gap on Moore as lapped traffic came into play late in the race. Steve Santie shot out of turn four down low to take the third spot from Stephens at the finish. Randy Martin grabbed fifth. Santie and Moore won the heat races. Moore holds a commanding 70-point lead in the season standings.

Jared Wagster continues his domination of the Pure Street division at Malden with his fourth straight win. Wagster started in the second row, dove low through one and two and had the lead by the end of the first lap. Three caution flags were the only thing that slowed Wagster down in the race. Chuck Tilley, Mike Cook and Mark Williams were able to hang tough, but never posed a serious challenge to Wagster’s lead. Tilley took second in his best finish of the year. Cook was disqualified during post race tech inspection forfeiting third to Williams. Tim Gage and Red Rice rounded out the top five. Tilley, Cook, and Wagster won the heat races. Wagster holds a 48 point lead over Williams, who took over second. Tilley has moved into a tie for third with Gene Fowler, 68 behind the leader.

Darrell Ham and Scott Austin chased down early leaders Eric Allison and Jason Pennington on lap 2 and drove away to their third Cruiser A-Main win of the year. Josh and Lowell Calder held off McDaniel and Watkins to take third. The Cruiser B-Main went to Danny and Gennie Rice. Ham and Austin closed the gap to 4 behind Arnold and Arthur Simpson in the season points race. The Calder’s are 8 back in third.

Friday June 29th will feature the Dwarfs and regular racing in all five classes. The MARS Late Model series will make their second appearance a week later July 6th. Come FEEL THE THUNDER.
