Todd Rowland prevails in Winged Sprint Competition

Todd Rowland of Jackson bested the Winged Sprint Cars competition Saturday night by winning his first of the season and his first win in over four years. Joseph Geisler or St. Mary, picked up his second win in the open-wheel modified division while Terry James scored a win in the Limited Late Models and Jared Wagster was victorious in the Pure Street class.

When the green flag flew for the Winged Sprint feature event Rowland knew that he would have to do something spectacular to jump ahead of polesitter Lee Dunn. Dunn won the trophy dash earlier in the evening by a commanding margin earning the right to start on the pole.

As the sprinters came around turn four for the start of the race Rowland quickly gassed his 14R-sprint car getting the jump on the polesitter Dunn. Dunn would fall back to second with Jeff Davis and Paul May behind him.

"I definitely got away with that start, I knew I was going to have to get the jump on Lee at the start or I wouldn’t win." Stated Rowland.

Rowland jumped out to a healthy margin putting a three-second distance between himself and Dunn.

As the two front runners began to work on lap traffic the racers behind them were putting on some serious battles between Paul May, Robbie Standridge, Paul Patterson and Jeff Davis.

On the tenth circuit bad luck would strike the third place car of May as his machine and Darrell Martin spun in turns three and four bringing out the first caution of the evening. May and Martin had to restart in the back.

The remainder of the event would only see one more caution flag for Eddie Lynch as he smacked the wall in turn three and four.

Rowland continued to lead throughout the event with at times receiving pressure from Dunn while in lapped traffic but while Rowland maintained open track his sprint couldn’t be caught. Rowland led all 25 laps of the event to take his first checkered flag of the season.

Dunn held onto to second driving a five-year-old car owned by Jim Hall, Standridge finished third while Jeff Davis finished fourth and Steve Short rounded out the top five.

Joseph Geisler won the Open-Wheel Modified division. Geisler jumped out to the lead at the start of the race and never looked back leading all 20 laps of the event. For Geisler it was his second win of the year at the racepark.

Gregg Gross pressured the leader for 20 circuits but could never make the pass. Gross would settle for second. Last weeks feature winner John Barnett finished third, Larry Hull and Chris Hall rounded out the top-five.

Billy Hopkins looked as though he might win the Pure Street before problems plagued his car. Jared Wagster inherited the lead and went on to lead the final eight laps scoring his first win of the year. Cline Myers Jr. finished second, Pat Davidson moved from his eighth starting position to finished third. Cleo Wright and Dennis Shelby rounded out the top-five.

In the Limited Late Model division, Terry James led all 20 laps to score his first feature win of the year. Scott Gibbs in finished second, Henry Nash, Darrell Williams and TJ Williams completed the top-five.

Action at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark continues next week with Winged Sprints, Open-Wheel Modifieds, Pure Streets and Cruisers.
