Carl McKinney gets first York Triathlon Series win at Tyler County

Middlebourne, WV (June 9) - Carl McKinney's first trip to Tyler County Speedway on Saturday night was a memorable one. The young racer from Cranberry, PA won his first career feature in the York Triathlon Series Modified segment of the Mountaineer Modified Challenge.

With his victory in the Coy Brothers Trucking Dash, Jeff Sharp led the 22-car field to the green flag of the first-ever Triathlon Series event held in West Virginia. From outside of row one, Kenny Hall took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Hall held the way as the red flag would wave on lap 10, as Fuzzy Stiffler was involved in an incident that saw his car ending up upside-down.

Back to green, Hall continued to lead as seventh starting Carl McKinney had worked his way into second. On lap 13, Hall slid high in turn two and McKinney drove into the lead. McKinney continued to show the way as the laps clicked by, with defending Triathlon Series Champion Jeff Taylor working his way to second, after starting 15th. But the protégé of Lynn Geisler would hold the lead for the remaining distance, to score the victory.

McKinney was jubilant in victory lane. His win was not only his first in a York Series event, but the first of his career. He thanked his parentsfor all of their support, especially his father, who was celebrating his birthday. Taylor would race home second, ahead of Todd Roncaglione, Chad McClellan, and Bob McCann. Completing the top ten were Bob Diver, New York driver Mike Samuelson, Scott Stiffler, Jim Frontz, and Kari Petrosky. Ron Roncaglione and Fred Bratchie took the last transfer spots to the challenge race against the top drivers from neighboring sanctioning body AMRA.

A competitive battle for victory in the "King of the Modifieds" challenge went to AMRA's J.R. Nolan. Greg Schilling gave AMRA a second place finish on their home turf. Triathlon drivers took the next four spots with Todd Roncaglione, McKinney, Taylor, and McClellan next across the line. AMRA did win the total point battle, and they will get posession of a traveling trophy, which will reside in West Virginia until next year's Second Annual event. Track Promoter Scott Farley was extremely happy with the program, and immediately began negotiations with Officials of both clubs for a return engagement in 2002.

Stahl Plumbing qualifying Heat Races for the York Modifieds went to Scott Stiffler, Kari Petrosky, and Kenny Hall. Todd Roncaglione was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 15.06.
