Avid Dirt Track fans filled the stands at Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC Saturday to see some great, competitive action and they were not disappointed. Five divisions, including the new Mudslinger Division, made up a great racing program.

In the Semi-Modified Feature, Derrick Mathis of North Wilkesboro, NC made it two in a row in his Rick’s Wood and Mulch, Hollar Race Engines Ford Mustang. Steve Faw gave Mathis all he could handle throughout the race to finish a strong second. Jamie Holcomb and Sandy Martin gave strong performances to finish third and fourth with Junior Welborn finishing fifth.

After several weeks of being plagued by bad luck, John Stamper of Mt. Airy, NC finally found his way back into Victory Lane in the Sportsman Division. Stamper in his 98.1 WBRT, Main Street Service Center Camaro took the lead from Joel Bray who had mechanical problems early to take the win. Challenging Stamper were Gary Barnes, Daniel Moss and Terry Zachary who finished second, third and fourth respectively with Bray rounding out the top five.

Late Model fans were treated to an action packed feature as Mike Chilton of White Plains NC, in his Surry Chemicals Inc.Grand Prix held off last weeks feature winner Keith Holder to take the win. Chilton and Holder put on a competitive driving exhibition throughout the feature holding off Noel Tucker, the 2000 Late Model Champion, who finished third ahead of Chad Paxton and Terry Cardwell in fourth and fifth.

Pure Stock fans enjoyed a twist in the action as the field was inverted for the feature. Rookie Paul West of Boomer, NC took his third win of the season in the Piedmont Used Cars sponsored Camaro ahead of points leader Marty Billings who worked his way from the back of the field to take second. Aaron Hill, Jimmy Grimes and Mickey Anderson all had strong performances and finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The new Mudslinger Division featuring completely stock automobiles made its debut with Steven Anderson of Statesville, NC in his Anderson Racing Buick taking the win. Junior Eller finished second with Reggie Anderson third and James Eller finishing fourth.

Upcoming events at Friendship include an Enduro Race on June 30 and the Carolina Clash Series Super Late Models on Independence Race Weekend July 7. This week’s Race program will have gates opening at 4:00 PM with racing beginning at 6:00 PM.
