Barnett Survives Open-Wheel Main for $1,000

Standridge makes late race pass to win Winged Sprint main

John Barnett, of Sikeston, survived through nine caution flags, heavy lap traffic and 20 laps to take home the $1,000 top prize for the winner of the Open-Wheel Modified main event.

As the green flag flew for the start of the race Jeff Parmer jumped out to a quick lead only to have it negated as the caution flag flew for a five-car pileup.

On the second it was Parmer again but another caution would negate the start. The field would endure two more caution flag before the first green flag lap was completed.

While the field came around for the completion of the second lap with Parmer in the lead, Jared Wagster trailing and John Barnett third, the caution flew once again, for the fifth time.

As the field came around for the start of the second lap, Parmer led at the green and would lead for the next two laps. Barnett made a charging move on the fourth lap to move into the lead.

Barnett would control the top position for the next 16 laps holding off hard charges from Greg Gross and Greg King to win the big payday.

Gross finished in second after starting fourth and King crossed the line in third after starting 20th. Last weeks feature winner Larry Hull finished fourth and pole sitter Jeff Parmer finished fifth.

Winged Sprint competition saw a fierce battle between Steve Short, Todd Rowland and Robbie Standridge for top position throughout the 25 lap main event.

Starting from the first row outside Short jumped out to a quick advantage over Rowland. Short and Rowland put on a crowd-pleasing battle for the top position for several laps.

On lap five Robbie Standridge made his move around the third place car of Jeff Davis putting himself in the mix with Rowland and Short. Noting in victory lane that he had his car set-up for the end of the race Standridge didnít pass Rowland until the 13th circuit and passed the Short for the lead on the 16th lap.

Short put on a strong run early in the evening, at times jumping out to five and sixth car length advantages over the second place car of Rowland.

Standridge would continue to maintain the top point for the final nine laps. Rowland was able to finish second by passing Short on the 18th lap. Short held onto third while Jeff Davis and Alex Shanks finished behind Short.

Rex Berry made his second visit to Auto Tire and Parts Racepark in fine fashion taking home his second win of the year.

Jared Wagster jumped out to the initial advantage and led for the first two circuits before suffering mechanical difficulties, which would retire him from the event. Berry then took over the first spot with Cline Myers Jr. in tow.

Myers Jr. would pressure Berry throughout the event coming close to making a pass on several occasions. Berry would hold the top mark for the final 13 laps. Johnny Houart, Gene Fowler and Bill Hopkins completed the top-five finishers.

In Cruiser competition the team of Scott Austin and Darrell Ham finished exactly where they started, in first. The Qulin, Mo residents didnít waste anytime jumping from their front row starting position healthy lead. Behind the leaders the team of Jason Pennington and Eric Allison was able to bump their way up through the field to in second. Tim Borgfield and Al Besher of Sikeston picked up third while Ron Retherford and Frank Foster finished fourth; Allan Shaw and Bradley Phelps crossed the line in fifth.
