DONNIE MORAN SPORTS MILLION DOLLAR SMILE
One hundred laps of non-stop excitement culminated in Donnie Moran earning
one million dollars in the largest purse ever for a dirt track race Saturday
night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, OH.
Moran became the newest millionaire by winning the richest event in short
track history. Moran started outside front row for the 100 lap Eldora
Million and took the lead from pole sitter Don O'Neal on lap 27. Moran
dominated the middle portion of the event only to be challenged by Steve
Smith late in the race
Moran took advantage of race-long leader Don O'Neil's bobble going into the
first turn of the 27th lap to take the lead. Several drivers, including
Moran had several minor brushes with the wall by the halfway point as the
cushion pushed to the top of Eldora's high banks.
But Moran was on a million dollar mission and led the rest of the way to
pick up the historic win.
As the race wound down Steve Smith had firm control of second place and the
$50,000 that went with it, while Scott Bloomquist finished third. The race
for fourth between O'Neal, Wendell Wallace, and Davey Johnson got scrambled
at the white flag when a lapped car caused O'Neal to slow, letting Wallace,
Johnson, Steve Francis, and Moyer get by.
Bloomquist was fastest over a record-breaking 235-car field with a 16.187
second lap. The 120th fastest time, the last to transfer to the heats, was
Delmas Conley at 17.211 seconds, with just 1.124 seconds separating the 120
cars.
