ROOKIE SAM LEONARD SCORES STUNNING CAREER FIRST IN SUPER SPORTSMAN
Marysville's Sam Leonard Jr. pulled off the upset of the season Saturday
night by leading all 25 non-stop laps in winning the super sportsman feature
in only his second feature start. The former street stock driver
accomplished the feat in a mere seven minutes 43.13 seconds.
"I don't think the win will sink in for a while...it is overwhelming," said
Leonard. "I just can't believe it, who would have thought a street stock
driver would come up here and win? This is only the second race we've
qualified for."
"I've been coming here since I was five-years-old and watching these guys.
Never in a million years did I think we would win a sportsman feature this
early."
At the checkered, Leonard was victorious over Scott Snyder and John
Provenza to become the ninth different winner in 11 races this season at the
Springs.
Harrisburg's Charlie Kope took the lead from Bud Barton on the eighth lap
and held off Barton and Scott McCann to win his first limited late model
feature of the season. The win also made Kope the fifth different winner in
seven races for the late models.
Myerstown's Scott Thunberg passed Greg Foster after a ninth lap restart to
take the lead and eventual win in the 20-lap street stock feature.
Thunberg's first win of the season made him the fifth different winner in
six races in the highly competitive street stock division.
