Sammy Stile takes win at Challenger

Indiana, PA (June 9) - Sammy Stile was the winner of the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on Saturday night at Challenger Raceway. The Greensburg, PA driver used a late race pass of Nick Jones in posting his second feature victory of the season on Townsend Gas & Oil Night. Russ Dunn from Fenelton, PA picked up his first win of the season in the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature. In the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock main, it was Butch Lambert from Mars, PA notching his second win of the year. Also notching his second was Don Rodgers from Homer City, PA in the North East Locators Strictly Stocks.

The 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature had Nick Jones and D.J. Troutman on the front row of the starting grid. Jones would take the lead at the start, and would dominate the first half of the event. At the crossed-flags, it was Jones leading Rodney Phillips, Tom Decker, Dave Satterlee, and 12th starting Sammy Stile. After the final yellow flag of the race waved on lap 15, things would heat up at the front of the field. Working strong on the outside groove, Stile had a great restart to advance all the way to second. Jones had a few car-length advantage, but Stile quickly moved in to challenge. With an outside pass in turn four, Stile would take the lead on lap 20. Race traffic in the closing laps would make things interesting, but Stile held on to post his second victory of the season. Jones was forced to settle for a close second, ahead of Phillips, Jason Carnahan, and Decker. Satterlee finished sixth to retain the division point lead, as Dave Norton, Tony Burke, Chuck Kennedy, and Gene Kain rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Norton and Carnahan.

The 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature started with Chuck Kennedy and Will Cochran on the front row, as Kennedy took the early lead. Bruce Dreistadt settled into second as the green flag laps clicked by. Between the only two caution periods of the race on laps 9 and 10, ninth starting Russ Dunn worked his way into second. Back to green for the final time, Dunn immediately moved up to challenge Kennedy. Dunn made the pass to take the lead on lap 12. Kennedy charged back to pose a strong challenge, but Dunn would take his first win of the season despite an engine problem on the final lap. Kennedy settled for second. Dreistadt won the battle for third over Bob Skwara. Jim Fry erased his early season bad luck, scoring his best finish of the season in fifth. Dunn and Bob Rougeaux were the Heat winners.

John Hartman and RobKosecki led the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature to the green with Kosecki taking command. With just a pair of yellows on laps 5 and 6, the lead battle heated up as the race progressed. Fifth starting Butch Lambert moved up to challenge, pulling alongside Kosecki on lap 7. Racing door-to-door for two laps, Lambert would gain the lead on lap 9. Once in front, Lambert would go on to collect his second feature win of the season. Kosecki held off a challenge by Joe Kelley for runner-up honors. Point leader Jeff Walters was fourth, with Scott Bochek fifth. Heat winners were Kelley and Kosecki.

Don Rodgers was the winner in the 15-lap feature for the Strictly Stocks. After swapping the lead early with John Mazey, Rodgers drove on to his second victory of the season. Heat winner Mazey would race home second, as he regained the division point lead from Mark Marian. Bill Sigafoes was third, ahead of Bill Hebenthal and Joe Starcher. Winner Rodgers drew the number one to collect the $100 bonus money and car discount from division title sponsor North East Locators Auto Sales, who is also a sponsor on his car.
