Bradford capitalizes on leader's misfortune at Aztec
AZTEC, N.M. (June 2) - Capitalizing on the leader's last-lap mechanical misfortune, Derrall Bradford won the Fiesta Days feature at Aztec Speedway.
Bradford, from Farmington, ran in front for most of the 30-lap I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified main before Aztec's Eddie Farley took the lead back on the 28th circuit.
Farley took a three car length lead into the final set of turns before a broken ball joint sent his car into the wall. Brad-ford made the most of the opportunity and beat Monte Bolton of Lubbock, Texas, in the dash to the checkered flag and the top prize of $2,500.
Farley managed to keep his car running and on the track, fighting severe steering problems in getting around the cor-ners and then skewing in front of the tight trio of James Tabet of Farmington, Garye Higgins of Bloomfield and Aaron Spangler of Dove Creek, Colo.
Tabet was able to dodge around Farley, going to the high side of the track to take third, just ahead of Farley. Higgins was scored fifth.
Spangler spun at the end in his effort to avoid Farley, going sideways across the finish line and winding up in the in-field and in sixth.
Fiesta Days marked the fourth event on the National Modified Series schedule and Bradford set the fast pace the first 19 times around the track, fending off challenges from Brandon Carley of Farmington and then Farley. Dennis Rieb from Cortez, Colo., flipped on lap 20 and Farley was able to catch and pass Bradford on the resulting re-start.
A side-by-side and bumper-to-bumper battle ensued, with Farley finally starting to put some distance between his car and Bradford's before his last lap misfortune.
Carley had won the Friday night qualifying feature, leading from lap two 'til the finish. Higgins, Bolton and Farley made up the rest of the top four.
Garold Russell of Thedford, Neb., had moved from 23rd starting to fifth in the qualifying feature when his engine ex-pired.
Another Nebraskan, Gregg Buker of North Platte, finished 11th and moved into first place in the series point stand-ings. Carley is now third, behind David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kan.
