Lias continues mastery at Skyline Raceway
By Ed Billings
CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 27) - Sean Lias extended his streak, winning twice during the Memorial Day Weekend at Skyline Raceway.
Lias continued his dominance of the regular Saturday night program, then returned to victory lane on Sunday by win-ning the I.M.C.A. National Modified Series special event.
Randy Hall ran second in the 30-lap Haun Welding/Robert Keller Insurance Special. Tommy Paige was third and Steve Hartman and Cory Fachini rounded out the top five.
With a field of 43 I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds on hand, the action was hot and heavy from the word go. Lias and Hall drew starting spot one and two for the feature and the race was on.
Hall grabbed the early lead, but a rash of early cautions kept the field tightly bunched. By lap six, the top five were all heavy hitters with Hall, Lias, Fachini, Paige and George Catanzano running in that order.
Hall and Lias had the fans on their feet as they fought side by side for the lead. With Hall using a high groove, he opened the door for Lias on lap seven as Lias blasted by in turn two.
On lap eight, Hall jumped the cushion in turn four and slipped to fourth. That allowed Lias to open up a five-car length advantage. Successive cautions on laps eight and nine again bunched the field with Lias, Paige, Fachini, Hall and Catanzano making up the top five.
On the ninth circuit re-start, Lias again assumed command with Paige and Hall in a battle for second. Fachini slipped all the way to fifth, giving Catanzano fourth. Hall and Paige would swap second numerous times as Lias continued on top.
While the duel for second place continued, Fachini and Catanzano hooked up in a great tussle for fourth swapping that position back and forth.
Hall continued to run up high and finally assumed second for good on lap 25. He then set after Lias and caught him on lap 26. Lias worked his mastery of the Skyline track and held off every charge Hall made. Hartman made a late race charge to score fourth.
Lias also scored the win in the dash for cash and earned the $200 bonus for scoring both Saturday and Sunday's fea-tures.
