ECKERT MAINTAINS TOP SPOT WHILE WALLACE WINS
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR drove to his second straight United Dirt
Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series win at the Dakota State
Fairgrounds Speedway in Huron, SD Saturday night.
Wallace stepped to the outside on lap 12, and passed UDTRA point leader
Rick Eckert of York and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI to take the lead.
Wallace then held off a late race charge from Eckert to win the 100-lap main
event in Huron for the second straight year.
Eckert finished second in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Mustang, three
car-lengths behind Wallace at the checkered flag. It was the 12th top five
finish for Eckert in the first 16 events of the 2001 season for the UDTRA
Pro DirtCar Series. Eckert now holds a 203 point lead in the championship
hunt.
"I was racing with Dan (Schlieper) for the lead on the low side early in
the race, and Wally went flying around the outside of both of us," Eckert
said. "Our car was good, but the track rubbered up late in the race, and I
only had one shot at Wally when he pushed up. I got under him, but then I
pushed up too."
