Barton gets "Hat Trick" in thriller at Raceway 7

Conneaut, OH (May 18) - Let the records show that **** Barton from Ashville, NY topped a field of 40 cars to win the 25-lap Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Model feature event on Friday night at Raceway 7. That victory gives him a "Hat Trick" for the season, as he has won three features in as many nights of racing. The records will not tell the story of how he swapped the lead six times at the line with Chub Frank in a thrilling side-by-side battle that had the crowd buzzing. Another "Hat Trick" goes to Mike Hochschild from Ashtabula, Ohio. He recorded his third consecutive victory in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks. In the Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Models, it was Jay Watson from Conneaut, Ohio taking his first win of the season. Jim Frontz from Cambridge Springs, PA collected his first win of the season in the MHC Inc. E-Mods.

The 25-lap feature for the Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Models started with Rusty Whitmore and **** Barton leading the field on the starting grid. Barton took command at the drop of the green as the first yellow flag showed on lap 4. Sixth starting Frank Poniatowski moved to second on the restart, as the battle throughout the top five was stacked with cars. Flying on the outside lane was ninth starting Chub Frank, as he rocketed from seventh on the restart to third when the next lap was scored. A lap 7 yellow bunched the field for the restart, with Barton now feeling a challenge from Frank. With an outside pass, Frank would make the pass to grab the lead on lap 11. The pair would battle for the lead until a lap 15 yellow flag would wave. The restart would set up the six most exciting laps that anybody could ask for, as Frank and Barton locked themselves in a war for the top spot. The side-by-side battle found Frank running the outside, with Barton racing on the inside. Frank led at the line for lap 16, with Barton nosing ahead on the next lap. Frank led lap 18, as Barton led 19 at the line. Frank again led lap 20, with Barton ahead by inches on lap 21. It was this that would eventually decide the event, as a caution flag would come out. Raceway 7 restart rules put the leader alone in the front row, with the remainder of the field in double file behind. Frank would be taken from the high groove where he worked so well with 15th starting Rob Blair now up to third. Barton would control the remaining laps to score the victory, with Blair notching second. From 14th starting spot, Dan Armbruster nosed Frank at the line for third. Dave Lyon ran a solid race for fifth. Whitmore, Ryan Markham, Brent Rhebergen, Mark Osburn, and Ron Davies completed the top ten. With 40 cars in the pit area, Heat winners were Rhebergen, Poniatowski, Whitmore, and Bill Cunningham. Last Chance Race winners were David Scott and Bruce Hordusky.

The 20-lap Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Model main was a caution-filled event, starting with Jim Hyde and Merle Terry on the front row. When the pair touched on the first lap, it allowed Steve Hollabaugh to move to the early race lead. The race progressed slowly, with five caution periods dotting the first three laps. A run of green flag action had seventh starting Jay Watson up to challenge Hollabaugh. Watson used a pass off turn four to take the lead on lap 8, as Terry followed a lap later. More yellow flags appeared, and when the ninth of the event waved on lap 12, the 30-minute time limit had expired with Watson awarded the victory. Terry shook off an early season run of bad luck to get second place. Bryan Emory was third, with Hollabaugh and Tom Bonanno rounding out the top five. Bonanno and Wendell Pinckney were Heat race winners.

Jim Frontz and Bill Watson led the 20-lap MHC Inc. E-Mod feature to the green flag with Frontz quickly taking command. Frontz and Watson raced hard for the top spot as eight laps clicked by, before the first yellow flag of the event would wave. Laps 8 and 9 would be the only ones of the event with caution periods, as another extended green would end the event. Frontz and Watson would continue their battle for the lead, as race traffic would come into play in the closing laps. Frontz made the right moves in the traffic to collect his first feature victory of the season. Watson has struggled in the early season, but shook it off with a close second. Bootie Petsko made his season debut with a third place finish. Brent Rhebergen finished fourth, and is now tied with Frontz for the division point lead. Todd Roncaglione was fifth. Heat winners were Petsko, Watson, and Ron Roncaglione. The Last Chance Race winner was Kevin Decker.

Pat Gorton and Chuck Sullivan led the 15-lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature to the green flag with Sullivan taking the early lead in a highly competitive event. After a lap 1 yellow flag, it was Brian Douglas moving into the top position. Rich Howell, Russ Kapalin and Mike Hochschild joined the race for the lead, which was now at five cars. Douglas held off all challengers until a lap 7 restart. While racing for the lead, the cars of Douglas and Sullivan touched, moving both cars high in turn two. That opened up the inside lane for Hochschild, who flashed by to take over the lead. Once in front, Hochschild held off all challenges to secure his third straight win. Douglas was a close second ahead of Sullivan, John Hobbs, Sr., and Darrell Bossard. Hochschild, Bossard, and Douglas were Heat winners, as Eugene Stetson and Brian Watson were winners in Last Chance Races.

The Twin State Auto Racing Club members were guests of the speedway on this night. Raceway 7 will be back in action as the first special event of the season is set for Friday, May 25.
