Monson, Paris dominate winners circle at Britt
The skies cleared for an action packed night of racing at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt on Friday, May 11 for the Brother Bob Youngwirth Memorial. Feature winners received two cash bonuses, one from the family of Robert Youngwirth (Brother Bob) and the other from Sportsman's Corner of Algona.
Chad Palmer of Renwick went for the ride of his life in the I.M.C.A Hobby Stock division when he lost a wheel, flipping his car several times throughout corner one, putting an early end to his evening. The action didn't stop there as several cars traded paint on the front straightaway. Jim Smith of Belmond received the brunt of the accident as he was hit by another car avoiding a fishtail by John Simpson of Algona. From there, Jim was sent careening into the wall to put an end to his race for the evening.
Shane Monson of Clear Lake took the late lead on the 14th lap, but it was all he needed as he took the checkered in his second feature win at the Hancock County Speedway this season. Simpson was close on his heals for second place while Earl Webner of Garner finished third.
In the I.M.C.A. Modified division, Mike Hejna earned his win after starting in the fifth row, outside. Ron Houdek of Owatonna, Minn., took the early lead, holding on until lap 22 when Hejna challenged him nose to nose, taking the lead just out of corner two. Hejna went on to take the win with Houdek in a close pursuit for second place. Jason Slegh of Lansing, Minn., finished third.
Hejna and Slegh qualified for the Big Bud Shootout on August 10, with their top finishes in the Cash Dash, joining John Logue and Kevin Stoa who qualified in April.
Seventeen-year-old, Amy Woodward of Mason City gave the I.M.C.A. Stock Car male drivers a run for their money after leading five laps of the 20-lap event. Woodward lost ground in the sixth lap after meeting the edge of the back straightaway but regained control to stay in third place and holding on top the end. Skeeter Paris of Boone crossed the finish line with his second feature win in Britt for the 2001 season. Travis Hoeft of Ventura followed him for second place.
Larry Cook of Moorland led the entire way for the Limited 360 Modified division, but not without a fight from Lance Gardner of Garner and Ryan Ruter of Kanawha. The top three finishers battled it out taking turns working the inside groove. Nine laps into the race, Ruter almost led the pack, going three deep into the first and second corners, but was unable to continue the attack in corner four where he tangled heels with Gardner. The racers held on while Cook took the checkered followed by Gardner and Ruter.
Nathan Weig of Hubbard won the Econo Stock feature while Lance Deal of Ft. Dodge took second and Joe Paullin finished third.
Exciting racing action continues next Friday, May 18, with KLGA of Algona sponsoring the event. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m.
