Sam Stile in style at Challenger

Indiana, PA (May 12) - It has been a tough start to the racing season for Sam Stile at the Challenger Raceway. But the Greensburg, PA driver changed all of that by driving to victory in the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on Saturday night. Bad luck had struck in every other event that he had run, but tonight's winning effort may be the first step to turning his season around. The Townsend Gas & Oil Modified main was yet another thriller, as Chuck Kennedy from Mars, PA scored his second victory of the season with a last lap pass. Rob Kosecki from Leechburg, PA became the first repeat winner of the season in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stocks. There have been five different winners in as many races in the North East Locators Strictly Stocks, as Larry McBryar from United, PA joining the list of winners.

The 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature started with Nick Jones and Gary Lyle drawing front row positions on the starting grid. Jones took early command, before a yellow flag on lap 4 for Dave Satterlee, who slowed with a flat tire. Jones continued to lead the way, with Lyle and fifth-starting Sammy Stile giving chase. After a lap 9 yellow flag, Dutch Davies joined the leaders by taking third from Stile. A red flag waved on lap 11 for J.D. Johnson, who rolled over in turn three. He was uninjured in the incident. The lead battle had been quiet, but it would heat considerably as the race resumed. Stile moved back to third as Lyle began to work Jones for the lead. After a lap 14 tangle eliminated Davies, Stile was on the move as he slipped by Lyle for second. Disaster struck Jones on lap 16, as he broke loose and spun in turn two. Former point leader Dave Norton was knocked from the race in this incident. Stile inherited the lead, which he would hold comfortably until the checkered flag in securing his first victory of the season. Lyle halted an early season run of bad luck to secure his best finish of the season in second, as did Tony Raneri in third. Tom Decker finished fourth after starting in position 12, and now assumes the point lead. Satterlee charged from the tail on lap 4 to finish fifth. Matt Lux, Wally Fox, Rob King, Dave Peterman, and Russ Kolesar completed the top ten. Qualifying Heat winners were Lux and Jones.

For the second straight week, the 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature was decided with a last lap pass. The event started with Rich Logan and Kenny Hall on the front row, with Logan leading from the green flag. Sixth starting Chuck Kennedy had advanced to second by lap 5, and closed in on Logan. Jeff Taylor, from starting position 12, was advancing through the field, as he was third by the halfway mark. It was at this point that a three-car war for the lead ensued. Lap 14 saw the leaders three wide, as Taylor used the outside groove to take over the lead. Kennedy finally cleared Logan on lap 17, and set his sights on Taylor. A late yellow flag set up a two-lap dash to the finish to decide the winner. With Taylor high and Kennedy low, the last two laps were similar to last week's main. However, this week it was Kennedy making the last lap pass to score his second feature win of the season. Taylor settled for a close second, but remains as the division point leader. Logan was third ahead of Bob Skwara and Ken Herman. Taylor, Kennedy, and Herman were the Heat winners.

Rob Kosecki and Joe Large led the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature to the green flag, with Kosecki quickly taking command. Mike Hilla, Jr. moved to second, with point leader Jeff Walters quickly charging from ninth starting spot to third place. A red flag appeared on lap 5 for Jim Swezey, who rolled over in turn two. Swezey was uninjured, but his car suffered heavy damage. As the race continued, Walters advanced to second and moved up to challenge Kosecki. Butch Lambert also advanced to join the lead battle, but Kosecki was able to hold off all challengers in becoming the first driver in the division to notch a second victory. Walters held off Lambert to secure second place. Strictly Stock graduate Hilla drove to his best finish of the season in fourth, as Joe Kelley was fifth. Heat winners were Harold Reges and Walters.

In the 15-lap feature for the Strictly Stocks, former point leader Bill Hebenthal led from the start before the lead battle heated up. Working race traffic, Hebenthal got spun around to take him from the lead and end his race. Mark Marian inherited the lead on the lap 8 restart, but slipped high in turn two. That allowed Larry McBryar to race by on the inside, and McBryar would hold the lead for the remaining distance to keep the string of different winners alive. Marian held on for second ahead of new point leader John Mazey, Dennis Aukerman, and Joe Starcher. Don Rodgers was the Heat winner. Mazey was drawn to collect the $100 bonus money and car discount from division title sponsor North East Locators Auto Sales.
