Mann hangs on for first win
KT Motorsports of Markesan sponsored the regular season opener that saw second year driver Bob Mann pick up his first career win in the DCRA Pure Stock division. Mann held off the late charge of Steve Seitz for the victory. Defending track champion Jay Schraufnagel only led three laps in his modified but it was the last two laps as he took the win over Ed Devall who led the majority of the race. In the IMCA Stock class it appears that the rest of the field hasnít yet figured out how to beat the dominant car of Jeremy Christians. Christians picked up his second consecutive win in convincing fashion.
Congratulations to Nate Strobel of Woodland for his win in the Falbe Collision and Automotive JR Hot Rod.
It only took Christians until lap 2 to take the lead as he first dispatched John Stanton and then Scott Erdmann. Christians slowly pulled away from the field leaving Elroy Thrun and Jeff Owens to battle for second. Thrun and Owens ran bumper to bumper for many laps but on lap 10 Owens managed to get his nose under Thrun and take the spot. Owens then put some breathing room between himself and Thrun but could not gain on the leader as Christians cruised to the win.
The IMCA Modifieds took a while to get started because of cautions on the first lap. The first was a multicar spin; the second was when Scott Lewis ran over a slowing car causing his car to flip into the air coming to rest on all four wheels. Lewis was unhurt but the same could not be said for his racecar. Lee Tibbits led Ed Devall for a few laps but began to fade by lap 5.
Devall stayed in the lead over Keith Schmitt as a couple more cautions came out on lap 6 for spun cars. Tim Lemirande used the restart to jump into third on the outside but immediately lost power and came to rest on the backstretch forcing another caution.
Devall led the field on the restart over Dennis Schultz and Schraufnagel. A little back from the lead pack another group of cars was being led by Schmitt and a smoking Sammy Strasser. By lap 15 Strasserís problem became terminal and he pulled to the infield. The final caution came out for a tire on the track at with 3 laps to go. Devall went into the first turn with Schraufnagel on the outside and Schultz on the inside but it was Schraufnagel who exited turn 2 with the lead. Schraufnagel held on to win with Devall in his tire tracks.
The DCRA Pure Stocks had their first feature of the season and it was Bob Mann taking the lead on lap one and never relinquishing it. Craig Lepple ran second until he jumped the burm and allowed Steve Sietz and Darrell Bittner to get underneath. Lepple would recover and hang on to finish fourth. By lap 10, Seitz had closed onto the bumper of Mann and began to look for a way to pass. Two laps later Seitz was sticking his nose under Mann going into the corner but Mann had the traction and stayed out front for the remaining three laps to claim his first career feature win.
The final events for the night were the Fischbach Tire and Auto Mechanics Races. A large number of mechanics took their turn around the track in the car they spend all year working on. Jason Egger beat out 11 other mechanics in Kelly Brownís IMCA Modified. Tim Thrun piloted Elroy Thrunís IMCA Stock car to a win over 7 others and Scott Mann put Bob Mannís car into victory lane for the second time of the night by besting 7 competitors in his DCRA Pure Stock.
