Jamie Perry In-Spec’s Cleveland’s SLM Future
The Super Late Models backed up last weekends “thriller” and didn’t let racefans stop cheering Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway. “The Ringgold Kid” Jamie Perry held off 2001 rookie contender Chris Beavers to win round # 7 of the 2001 championship season. Perry racing his “Sims Carpet Care, Cedar Hill Poultry Farm, Port City Racing South” sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo won his first race of the season, picking up the Spec-Motor $200 bonus using his “Race Engine Design” powerplant. In the special Hobby division “Mid-Season Championship” race, the “North Carolina Connection” was disconnected as Birchwood TN racer Lynn Roark took a late race lead to the checkered flag. In the Claimer Late Model division Chris Powell of Cleveland TN was the winner and was properly claimed by sixth place finisher Elgin Gray. The Pony Stock winner was again Kenneth Elliott who won a season high fourth feature victory. In the Street feature it was reigning division champion Anthony Hawkins taking the win in the 12 lap finale.

In Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying, David Smith again set the pace turning a 14:691 second lap. In the first of two Super Late Model heat races, third fastest qualifier Brad Coffey took the early lead. Smith would battle back though and at the checkered flag would reign victorious by a few inches. Perry and fourth fastest qualifier Burrows battled in the second heat. It would be Chris Beavers rallying to second in the heat by Burrows. As the field was about to take the green flag to start the 30 Lap “A” Main race polesitter Smith’s fuel cell cap came off which regulated him to the rear of the feature for the start. Perry took command against the inherent polesitter Coffey as the green flag waved over the field. A parking lot of damaged racecars cluttered turn four when Tim Richardson spun in turn four of the opening laps. Beavers worked by Coffey on the restart and set his sights on Perry. Jake Lowry ended his top five run careening off Richardson and reigning track champion Andy Dill. Burrows and Coffey continuingly battled for third until Burrows settled into position behind Beavers. John Owenby raced by Coffey late in the feature for his best finish of the season. Though penalized current SLM points leader David Smith rallied back to a sixth place finish as Perry took the checkers.

In the special Hobby Mid-Season Championship race it was Doyle Herron of Cleveland earning the pole position by winning the first of two heat races. Accompanying Herron on the front row was Murphy NC racer and current points leader Chris Stewart who won the second heat race for the division. As the green flag flew for the 30 lap special event Herron rocketed into the lead. His lead wouldn’t last though, as fluid erupted from the motor. As Stewart took the green flag single file restart Lynn Roark began his charge to the front. Roark took the lead and almost relinquished it to Doug Works as the laps waned. Roark in his “Jeep City, Hunter Utility Construction” sponsored, white #5 took the win with Works, and Stewart following. Stephanie Yancy and Chris Davis rounded out the top five.
