Race fans made their way to Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC Saturday night for another display of Dirt Track racing at its finest. Whether they were there to race, eager to watch or just enjoying being outside on a beautiful evening, everyone found something interesting and entertaining.
The Semi-Modified 4 feature had Jamie Holcomb grabbing an early lead which he maintained until lap 9, when Derrick Mathis slipped underneath to take the lead. Mathis of North Wilkesboro, NC, in his Rick’s Wood and Mulch, Hollar Racing Engine Ford, went on to take the win. Eddie Blackburn overtook Holcomb midway through the event for second. This left Holcomb finishing third with Tim Wyatt and Steve Faw rounding out the top five.
After John Stamper, who led strong early in Sportsman action, went to the pits with a tire down, Joel Bray and Daniel Moss picked up the action with another display of one on one competition that reminded fans why they came. Bray of Hamptonville, NC in his Fleetwood Homes, Stratford hearing Aid Center Monte Carlo held off Moss to pick up his first Friendship win of the season. Moss held strong to take second with Terry Zachary in third, Raymond Pennington in fourth and Gary Barnes finishing fifth.
Mount Airy’s Noel Tucker took another Late Model win in his T & T Home Improvements, Aunt Bea’s Barbecue, 4D Electric Pontiac as he held off a strong challenge from Keith Holder and Kevin Gwyn who finished second and third. Chad Paxton fell back after a strong start to finish fourth with Ronald Blankenship taking fifth.
In the Pure Stock division, Jimmy Grimes in his Alvin’s Alignment, Greenhorn Grill Monte Carlo, brought home another win by holding off brother-in-law Marty Billings who had to settle for second. Last week’s feature winner, Paul West made a strong third place showing with Josh McCreary in fourth and Fabian Anderson in fifth.
Bryan Nance of Roaring River, NC in his Add Amusements, The Junction, Carolina Rock Masons Grand Prix, put another Limited Late Model win in the books by holding off Jerry Farley whose determined run gave him a second place finish. Jimmy Watson, after damaging his car early, came back with the "open-wheel modified look" to take third with Tony Lowe and Tommy Zachary rounding out the field.
Upcoming events at Friendship Speedway include an Enduro Race on May 19 and a "Powder Puff" feature on May 26. Gates will open Saturday at 4:00 PM with a full slate of racing action beginning at 6:00 PM.
