Barton wins again at Raceway 7

Conneaut, OH (May 4) - For the second straight week, it was **** Barton from Ashville, NY winning the 25-lap Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Model feature event on Friday night at Raceway 7. Also notching his second win of the season in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks was Mike Hochschild from Ashtabula, Ohio. Winning his first event at Raceway 7 in the Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Models was 16 year-old Dave Hess, Jr. Dale Applebee from Clymer, NY was the winner in the MHC Inc. E-Mods.

In the 25-lap feature for the Maloney Tool and Mold Super Late Models, the draw for starting positions gave Dan Armbruster and **** Barton berths on the front row. Armbruster took the lead at the drop of the green flag as a starting field of 27 cars gave chase. Barton settled into second, as Rich Gardner and Bob Close battled for third in the early laps. Close finally took over third, as seventh starting Rob Blair advanced to fourth. The leaders soon had race traffic to deal with as the green flag laps continued to tick by. With the leaders in heavy traffic on lap 13, it was Barton moving to the low side to take over the race lead on lap 14. Once in front, Barton began to move away from the field as the leaders continued to deal with race traffic. Close passed Armbruster for second on lap 20, as the first yellow flag of the race would appear. Barton would see his comfortable advantage disappear, but would also have a clear track in front. Back to green, Barton still led the way as Blair moved to third. A late yellow on lap 23 gave the field a last shot at the leader, but it was Barton driving to his second win in as many weeks. Blair made a late move to take second place away from Close. Dave Lyon drove a solid race to finish fourth, with Armbruster fifth. Jim Dandy, Jr., Greg Fenno, Dutch Davies, Chris Hackett, and Tony Lombardi rounded out the top ten. Qualifying Heat race winners were Barton, Close, and Blair.

The 20-lap Jay's Auto Wrecking Steel Block Late Model main had Chris Brockway and Wendell Pinckney on the front row, with Brockway leading from the start. Quickly on the move in the early laps was Jay Watson, advancing from starting position 12 to third place before the first yellow flag of the race waved on lap 4. Brockway still led on the restart, but Watson had moved to second and was soon challenging for the lead. With a pass in turn two, it was Watson taking command on lap 7. A red flag brought the race to a halt on lap 9 for a front stretch wreck that eliminated Brian Huffman, Tom Denzinger, Mark Ashcraft, and Tom Bonanno. On the restart, Watson continued to lead but it was eighth starting Dave Hess, Jr. moving to second. When Watson slipped high on lap 11, Hess flashed by to take the lead on lap 12. Doug Eck moved into second, as Watson would retire back to the pits. The closing laps would see an intense battle for the lead, as Eck got along side of Hess on several occasions. But the youngster held on to score the win, an impressive drive for the second-generation driver. Eck was forced to settle for a close second but did assume the division point lead. Brockway was third, as Pinckney drove a strong race to finish fourth. Tim Glass was fifth. Eck and Watson were Heat race winners.

The 20-lap MHC Inc. E-Mod feature was a caution filled event, with the yellow flag waving ten times over the scheduled distance. When the time limit expired on lap 17, the event was flagged as completed. Dale Applebee had led the entire distance from the outside pole position, and was awarded the feature win. As the final lap was scored, it was Todd Roncaglione just inches ahead of Jim Frontz in the race for second. Mike Hess came from starting position 23 to finish fourth. Point leader Brent Rhebergen was fifth after being involved in a lap 6 tangle. Heat race winners were Bill Watson, Applebee, and Rhebergen.

Chip Davis and Brian Douglas led the 15-lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature to the green flag with Douglas taking command. Fourth starting Russ Kapalin moved up to challenge as Douglas continued to lead the way. After a lap 7 restart, 13th starting John Hobbs, Sr. and Mike Hochschild joined the lead battle. After a lap 12 caution period, Hochschild was able to take over the lead on lap 13, as Douglas and Kapalin got together to force a final caution period. With a two-lap dash to the finish, Hochschild went on to secure his second win and continue as the division point leader. Hobbs completed a fine drive to come home second. After being involved in a lap 7 incident, Jim McFadden raced back through the field for third. Douglas charged back to fourth at the finish, with Mike Boyd fifth. Heat winners were Douglas and Darren Buell.
