Wollam scores Best of Midwest Series win at Stuart
STUART, Iowa (May 1) - The racing fates that smiled on Jeff Wollam had only a frown for Rick Brown.
Wollam won the Midwest Motorsports Best of the Midwest Series feature for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Cars Tuesday night at the Stuart Speedway. He gotten the lead back with just two laps left when Brown was slowed by a flat tire.
Wollam, from Marshalltown, took the checkers a couple car lengths ahead of Webster City's Mark Elliott. Brian Blessington of Breda, Jeremy Christians of Horicon, Wis., and Shawn Anderson of Haverhill rounded out the top five.
Brown salvaged a sixth place finish. The veteran from Kellogg, the only driver to have competed at each of the 80 events in series history, saw his hopes for a fourth career tour victory deflate along with his left rear tire.
The pole start for the second series event of the season belonged to Steve Campbell of Des Moines. Wollam took the opening green flag from the outside of row one and found a way past Campbell on the third circuit.
Wollam set the pace through lap 20, when the frontrunners caught up with the back of the pack. Brown got underneath Wollam in lapped traffic an held the point 'til suffering the fateful flat.
Elliott won the series crown in 1999 and moved atop the current point standings with his second runner-up showing in as many events.
Christians, winner of the March 31 series opener at Beatrice, Neb., is a point behind Elliott heading into the next Best of the Midwest race May 28 at the Boone Speedway.
Winners of heat races at Stuart were Elliott, Christians and Dan Sprunger of Earlham.
