Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC offered another full slate of Dirt Track racing action Saturday night. The first feature of the night was an edge of the seat Limited Late Model thriller. Bryan Nance of Roaring River, NC jumped to an early lead that he maintained until lap 9 when he fell victim to an incident involving a lap car, caromed into the turn 3 wall and was knocked out of contention. Darren Sipe of Taylorsville, NC, close behind Nance at the time of the incident, took the lead. Sipe maintained the lead until the white flag lap when he lost his drive shaft allowing close challenger Jerry Farley in his Harrington Machine Shop, Southern Thunder Speedway sponsored Pontiac to take the win. Farley of Taylorsville, NC, after blowing an engine last week, raced to the checkers using a back-up engine from the Bryan Nance racing stables. Sipe held on to take second, with Tony Lowe, Darryl Richardson and Bryan Nance rounding out the top five.

In Semi-Modified 4 action, Derrick Mathis held the lead for the first three laps when Jamie Holcomb of Hamptonville, NC in his Donald’s Automotive, Carl Rose & Sons paving Mustang got by him and held off a determined Junior Welborn to take home another win. Welborn of Wilkesboro, NC took second with Steve Faw in third, William Jones fourth and Derrick Mathis after suffering early problems came back to finish fifth.

Noel Tucker of Mt. Airy, NC in his Aunt Bea’s Restaurant, 4-D Electric, Mayberry Models Pontiac took top honors in the Late Model feature followed by Mike Chilton in second. Chilton worked his way past Keith Holder to claim the second spot on lap 10 while Holder later went to the pits with mechanical problems. Kevin Gwyn ran a strong race to finish third with Chad Paxton in fourth and Ronald Blankenship finishing fifth.

In a strongly competitive Sportsman Feature, lead changes among Daniel Moss, Joel Bray and Greg Brown treated fans to a first class show of Dirt Track racing at its best. Bray jumped to an early lead, only to be passed by Moss who led for a brief time when Greg Brown of Mountain City, TN got around Moss for the third lead change of the race. Moss of Elk Creek, VA in his Cedar Springs Sportsman Lodge, Watson Auto Chevelle, then recaptured the lead and held off Bray and Brown for the win. Bray held strong to finish second, with Brown third, Gary Barnes fourth and Terry Zachary running fifth.

Paul West of Boomer, NC took his first Friendship win in the Pure Stock feature to be greeted in Victory Lane by an exuberant crew who doused him with a cooler of ice. West in his Piedmont Used Cars Camaro held off consistent challenges by Robert Marion and Jimmy Grimes only to be hotly pursued to the checkers by second place finisher Marty Billings in the last laps of the race. Robert Marion, Jimmy Grimes and Josh McCreary rounded out the top five.

Upcoming Events at Friendship include the Sonny Stutts Memorial Enduro Race on May 19 and a Powder Puff Race on May 26. Gates will open this week at 4:00 PM with a full racing program beginning at 6:00 PM.
