BLOOMQUIST BREAKS UDTRA SLUMP WITH GAFFNEY WIN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

GAFFNEY, SC - Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN passed UDTRA point leader
Rick Eckert of York, PA for the lead with three laps to go, and went on
to
post his first United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series win
of the season Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway in front of a
third-straight standing-room-only crowd for the series.

Throughout most of the 50-lap $10,000-to-win event, it was a classic
wheel-to-wheel battle between two of the nation's best dirt late model
talents that kept the 8,000 race fans, the second largest crowd in the
44-year history of Cherokee Speedway, on their feet.

For several laps, Bloomquist kept Eckert busy, as the defending and
four-time UDTRA Champion would take his Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom
Mustang into turns one and three to the outside of Eckert's Raye Vest
Rocket/Cornett Mustang. Bloomquist would set his car, then drive down the
banking in turns two and four to try and get a run on Eckert down the
straightaways.

Running just inches apart, Bloomquist passed Eckert for the lead on lap
37
in turn three of the -mile high-banked clay oval, but the move was negated
by a caution flag. Bloomquist picked up where he left off after the
restart, and passed Eckert in the same spot, with the same move on lap 48.

"You can't be faint of heart at this track going into turn one on the high
side as fast as we were going," Bloomquist said. "Where I was running wasn'
t the best groove, but it was the only groove I could use to pass Rick.
I
had him once before the caution came out, but it took about three laps once
we got going again to get enough heat in my tires."

The 78th UDTRA career win for Bloomquist, ends a weekend where he came
out
of a slump of sorts. After the first ten races of the season, Bloomquist
only had one top ten finish to his credit. The Saturday night win,
following up a fourth place finish Friday night in Cochran, GA, vaulted
Bloomquist into the fifth spot in the UDTRA point standings.

"We've had some bad luck with engine problems, but we spent a whole day
working on nothing but engines," Bloomquist said. "We have been looking
forward to going to Cherokee Speedway because this place has been good to
me
in the past, and I knew we could put something good together here."

The victory was the sixth UDTRA win for Bloomquist at Cherokee Speedway
dating back to the 1993 season.

Eckert finished second and padded his UDTRA point lead over Steve Francis
of Ashland, KY to 67 points. For the second straight night, Eckert was
the
fastest in time trials, turning in a lap in 19.294 seconds for an average
speed of 93.293 miles per hour.

Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN took the third spot in the J&J Steel
BarryWright/Clements Grand Prix, and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI brought
his Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo home in the
fourth spot. Schlieper moved up to fourth spot in the UDTRA points chase
behind Eckert, Francis, and 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville,
AR.

Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA earned the JE Pistons Hard Charger of the
Race Award with a fifth-place finish in the Larry Shaw Race Cars Larry
Shaw/Hatfield Grand Prix. McDowell had to race his way into the field
through the consolation race, and started 20th.

Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI finished sixth in the Parker Store
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo, and seventh went to Francis in the
Valvoline/Mopar Performance Rocket/Stanton Dodge. Ray Cook took the eighth
spot in the English Mountain Spring Water GRT/Cornett Mustang.

Ricky Weeks of Rutherfordton, NC claimed the ninth position in the Starrette
Trucking GRT/Clements Grand Prix, and Chris Madden of Laurens, SC rounded
out the top ten in the Banks Brokerage GRT/Custom Monte Carlo.

At the drop of the green flag, veteran Mike Duvall of Cowpens, SC took the
lead from the outside front row starting spot over polesitter Eckert. A
front straightaway spin by Terry English of Benton, KY brought out the
caution for a complete restart. Duvall once again prevailed, but a caution
on lap four for a spin by Billy Hicks of Mount Airy, NC in turn four bunched
up the field again for a restart.

Duvall led Eckert, Bloomquist, Schlieper, Cook, and Johnson back to the
green flag. By lap eight, Duvall was pulling away from Eckert, while
Schlieper battled with Bloomquist for third, and Johnson climbed up to the
fifth spot. On the 12th lap, Bloomquist moved up to challenge Eckert for
second.

After a couple more cautions for stalled cars around the speedway, it was
still Duvall up front with his famous Flintstone Flyer GRT/Clements Monte
Carlo. After a lap 25 restart, however, it didn't seem like Duvall could
shake Eckert like he did in the first half of the race. Suddenly on lap
28
in turn two, Duvall's car stuttered up the banking, and Eckert ducked under
him for the lead.

By the time Duvall made it back to the front straightaway, his left-rear
tire blew apart shredding rubber all over the race track. Duvall retired
for the evening, but Eckert and Bloomquist took center stage, as they went
wheel-to-wheel all the way to the checkered flag.

Eckert won the JE Pistons $100 Bonus Award with a first heat race win,
and
Duvall won the second 12-lap Borla Performance heat race, but failed to
claim the $50 Scott Performance Wire Bonus Award, which will now roll over
to $100 at the next event. Cook won the third heat, and Dennis "Rambo"
Franklin of Gaffney, SC won the 12-lap Renegade Transporters/Polaris ATV
Consolation Race.

The UDTRA pro DirtCar Series will be back in action on May 4-5 with a pair
of 50-lap $10,000-to-win main events at two different tracks in two
different states. On May 4 the nation's top dirt late model drivers will
be
at Thunder Ridge Speedway in Prestonsburg, KY, and then on May 5 they travel
to KC Raceway in Chillicothe, OH.
