DAVEY JOHNSON WINS STANLEY SCHETROMPF MEMORIAL AT HAGERSTOWN

HAGERSTOWN, MD -Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA started seventh and worked
his way past Brian Birkhofer on lap 34 and never looked back as he captured
the Renegade STARS Racing Series sanctioned
20th Annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial at the Hagerstown Speedway Saturday
night. Johnson pocketed $6,000 for the 50-lap event.

"The car felt good, Brian Birkhofer and a couple other Rocket Cars in
front were good too, but we were just a little bit better," said Johnson. "I
knew Brian was good there in the beginning, but we started taking a different
line and the car was good, so we took advantage of it while we could. Brian
was running strong but we needed the win though."

"The track was good, Randy (Grove) did a great job and I haven't seen
Hagerstown like this in a long time," added Johnson. "It was fast, racy and
smooth. You couldn't ask for a better surface."

In other action, Marvin Winters captured his fourth win in the 20-lap
Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic late model sportsman feature, Mike Warrenfeltz made
it two in a row in the 15-lap Ernie's Salvage Yard 4-cyl pure stock feature
and Josh Angle recorded his third win in the 10-lap 4-cyl pure stock main
event.

In the late model feature, Jackie Boggs and Brian Birkhofer led the field
to the green battling it out side-by-side. But before the first lap could be
completed the caution was waving for a four car tangle in the back of the
field which eliminated Nathan Durboraw from the race. On the restart, Boggs
powered into the lead as Birkhofer, Rodney Franklin, M. Johnson and Steve
Shaver fell in behind. D. Johnson began his move to the front on the next lap
taking fifth from Shaver and then moved past his younger brother for fourth
on lap seven. Birkhofer hounded Boggs for the lead as D. Johnson continued
his way forward moving past Franklin for third on lap nine.

Birkhofer took over the lead on lap 10 as Boggs drifted high onto the
cushion and Johnson took advantage of Boggs slip moving past Boggs for
second. Birkhofer started pulling away from the field once in the lead, but
Johnson was able to close the gap as the leaders closed in on the slower cars
on lap 18. As the field worked lap 20 contact between Franklin and R.J.
Conley in their battle for fifth sent Franklin spinning in turn one bringing
out the caution. On lap 30, D. Johnson pulled even with Birkhofer and two
laps later nosed ahead with Birkhofer getting the lead back the next lap only
to lose the spot to D. Johnson on lap 34. Two laps later the caution waved
again as Jim Bernheisel pulled to a stop with an overheated engine. On the
restart D. Johnson was able to pull away from Birkhofer opening up his lead
to nearly a full straightaway by races end.

Birkhofer held off ninth starting Mike Balzano for runner-up honors while
Mike Johnson rode home fourth with tenth starting Chub Frank fifth.
Completing the top finishers were Gary Stuhler in sixth followed by 13th
starting Jeremy Miller, Todd Andrews, R.J. Conley and 21st starting Matt
Miller.

Rodney Franklin set fast time with a quick lap of 18.829 seconds. Heat
winners for the 47 cars were D. Johnson, Andrews, Balzano and Frank. The twin
MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Mains fell to Doug Burkholder and Andy Fries while
Jackie Boggs copped the ISKY RACING CAMS dash. Though he won the second "B"
Main event Fries was unable to start the feature event due to a blown engine
allowing Nathan
Durboraw to start the race.

In the late model sportsman feature, Marvin Winters started 11th in the
13 car field and wasted no time moving through the field to take the lead
from last week's feature winner Richard Walls on the fifth lap. Once in
front, Winters cruised to his fourth win in five events and also picked up
the St. Thomas Towing/Checker Lube Hard Charger Award. Richard Walls settled
for second with Barry Miller, Wayne Walls Jr., Robert Friese, Mike Walls,
Richard Clipp, Robert Weaver, Daryl Kendall and Scott Palmer finishing out
the top ten. Heat winners were Winters and Palmer.

In the pure stock feature, Jeff Johnson started on the pole and led the
field for one lap until he lost the handle coming off the fourth turn
scattering the field and collecting Kenny Dillon and Eugene Conley. On the
restart, Brian Miller took command as Mike Warrenfeltz, who started ninth,
quickly moved into the runner-up spot by lap three. On the next lap,
Warrenfeltz moved in front and cruised to his second win. Miller settled for
second with Hans Stamberg and Steve Lowery next. Bruce Leibowitz came from
the rear of the field after a first lap accident to nail down fifth. Heat
winners for the 31 cars were Johnson, Ronnie Dennis and Warrenfeltz.

Marcus VanMeter grabbed the lead from the outside pole in the 4-cyl pure
stock feature as Josh Angle followed in second after starting fourth in the
11-car field. Angle pulled even with VanMeter on lap four before taking the
lead on lap five. Angle was never seriously challenged the rest of the way as
he picked up the win over Van Meter, Ronnie Garlock, Eric Mellott and Ashley
Gordon.

The Hagerstown Speedway will return to action next Saturday, May 5th with
the ITSI late models, Hoosier Tires late model sportsman, Ernie's Salvage
Yard pure stocks and the 4-cyl pure stocks. It will be Ernie's Salvage Yard
for the pure stocks with the entire purse doubled from top-to-bottom. Race
time is 7 P.M. Adult admission is $9.00.
