Sexton cruises to second I-81 Late Model victory

By Robert Walden

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (April 27) – A dominating performance Friday night at I-81 Motorsports Park in the Late Model feature by Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge found the talented chauffeur parked in victory lane celebrating his second win at the 3/8-mile track this season. Sexton paced the Late Model field in qualifying to capture the pole position, then proceeded to lead the feature flag-to-flag in lapping up to the fourth place finisher at the checkers.

At the drop of the green flag Sexton bolted into the lead over outside front row starter Dale Ball and never looked back. Ball tried to keep the high-flyin’ race leader within sight, but Sexton was hooked-up and haulin’ en route to the victory.

Sexton, driving the Quality Heating & Air/Smooth Cut/GRNC Brewster Motorsports/J.T. Kerr Racing Equipment/ABJ Custom Powder Coating/Matco Tools/Mazda of Knoxville/Newport Auto Parts/Stinger Race Cars/Custom Race Engines/No. 52 Grand Prix, was followed at the finish by Ball, Brad Carty, Michael Jackson and Kerry Jones.

Newport’s Jimmy Owens started from the pole position and led the feature wire-to-wire in winning the UMP Modified main event over Wayne James, John Harrell, Chris Pendleton and Kurt Owens.

Allen Perry of Bluff City was strong in rolling to the Super Stock feature victory over Randall Self, Jay Allan, Danny Holt and Ray Ivey.

Jonesborough’s Bobby Mays captured the Sportsman feature win over Shannon Emery, Tony Trent, Jeff Mays and Tony Strickland.

Kenny Absher of Abingdon, Va., held off Randy Lane, Runah Henry, Les Cox and Ivan Wines in winning the Mini Stock feature.

Another five-division racing program is scheduled next Friday, May 4 at I-81 Motorsports Park, located at Exit 44 on Interstate 81. For further information, contact Race Director Tim Carver at (423) 913-1211 or (423) 306-8340.
