Burgtorf adds Deery win to accomplishments at Quincy
By Brent Rosencrans and Kelly Becker
QUINCY, Ill. (April 22) - He's the multi-time defending track champion and a frequent visitor to Quincy Raceway's victory lane.
Mark Burgtorf can now add a Deery Brothers Summer Series victory to his list of accomplishments at his home-town track.
Burgtorf fought off a stubborn Dennis Woodworth to win the 50-lap I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model series feature Sun-day night. Woodworth, from Mendon, matched the career-best effort he'd established just nine days earlier with the run-ner-up finish.
Mike Cothron of Moline was third, Tommy Elston of Keokuk, Iowa, ran fourth and fifth place went to Rob Toland of Hillsdale.
The victory was worth $2,000 to Burgtorf, who also pocketed a $500 Champions Challenge bonus from JR Motor-sports. Sunday's win was also the 10th in his series career.
The most important few moments of the night might have been the draw for starting spots in the main event. Wood-worth and Burgtorf drew the top two pills, and when the green flag dropped it was Burgtorf jetting into the lead.
Nick Ingalls of Quincy slid sideways, bringing out a lap five caution. Burgtorf again checked out on the field while Woodworth and Cothron battled for second. Lap nine saw the yellow flag fly again as Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa, lost a drive shaft and drifted over the turn two banking.
With the track rubbering up, Burgtorf and Woodworth quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field and got into lapped traffic on the 20th circuit.
Woodworth started pressuring Burgtorf on lap 38, with Elston and Cothron finding holes in the field to transform a two car battle into a four car frenzy.
Both Woodworth and Elston would manage to get a nose in front of Burgtorf on the bottom, but Burgtorf held the momentum on the cushion and managed to hold on for the win.
Heat winners were DeFrance, Mike Dyche of Frederick, Elston and Burgtorf. Terry Ryan of Davenport, Iowa, and Jamie Wilson of Quincy took the "B" races. Winner of the trophy dash was Mike Smith of Jewell, Iowa.
The next Deery Series event is Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 at the Boone Speedway.
