MITTEN GETS FIRST WIN FOR NEW TEAM IN SPORTSMAN FEATURE
Russ Mitten and new car owner Ron Janney found the winning formula Saturday
night to pick up the super sportsman win at Silver Spring Saturday night.
Mitten started ninth, took the lead on the 20th lap, and raced away to his
first win of the season and fifth of his career.
"We've struggled with this car," said Mitten in victory lane. "We've
struggled a little bit with it so far, but I can't say enough about Ron
Janney the car owner, he has done a great job...and Shawn Keen, I can't
thank him enough."
"We knew it was a matter of time, I feel we might have got one taken from
us last week, but that's the way it goes. I could run anywhere on the
racetrack - I was real good through the middle."
Mitten passed Tom Wike for third on the 17th lap, then drove by Howie Locke
the next lap, and ran down race-long leader Billy Schoffstall with Mitten
getting by for the lead on the 20th lap.
Locke got by Schoffstall for second on the 21st circuit, but could not
close on Mitten over the final laps with Mitten winning by a
half-straightaway over Locke, Schoffstall, Smokey Snellbaker, and Paul
Tim Dietz took the lead from his pole starting spot in the ARDC Midget
feature and would lead the first six laps before suffering problems,
allowing Randy Mausteller, who started second, to take over the front spot.
Mausteller led until lap 13 when Ray Bull of Bloomsburg moved by with a pass
on the backstretch. Bull then led the rest of the way for his second ARDC
Midget Series win in a row over Brian Kobylarz Mausteller was third followed
by Jim Jackson and Lew Blair.
Bobby Hockenberry started on the pole and held off Smokey Snellbaker to win
the first ever Super Sportsman Cash Dash. Hockenberry won $200 for his
efforts in the five-lap event, which offered drivers cash or a guaranteed
starting spot in next week's feature.
