THE CHALLENGER RACEWAY NEWS

Indiana, PA (April 21) - Wally Fox from Cooperstown, PA nailed down his first Late Model feature win in ten years of trying at Challenger Raceway on Saturday night. Since the 25-year veteran entered the class in 1992, victory had eluded him until tonight's Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature. In the Townsend Gas & Oil Modifieds, veteran Jim Bertges from Pittsburgh, PA picked up his first victory of the season. Jeff Walters from Evans City, PA scored a career first feature win in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stocks. Mark Marian from Smock, PA not only picked up a career first feature win in the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks, but did so in his second career start.

Qualifying action narrowed a field of 36 Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Models down to 24 for the 25-lap feature, which started with Sam Stile and Wally Fox on the front row. Stile moved into the early lead, before a yellow flag waved on lap 2. Stile experienced mechanical problems under the yellow flag period, which ended his race. Fox inherited the lead, as the race progressed slowly until a restart on lap 6. Back to green, Fox continued to lead Dave Norton, before ninth starting Nick Jones moved to second on lap 10. Jones quickly closed on Fox, and the battle for the lead was on. A lap 14 yellow bunched the leaders once again, with the lead battle resuming. When Fox bobbled momentarily off of turn four on lap 16, Jones was right behind and made contact with the leader. The contact caused damage to the right front suspension of Jones' car, which ended his event. Leading the remaining distance, Fox scored his first feature win in the division since he entered it in 1992. Norton came home second but advanced to the division point lead. Nolan Dalton challenged for second in the closing laps, but raced home third. Dave Satterlee was fourth, with Tom Decker fifth. Chuck Kennedy, Rob Blair, Bobby Stokes, Dave Lyon, and Mike Blose completed the top ten. Lynn Geisler, Fox, and Decker were Heat race winners, with Ron Davies winning the Last Chance Race.

Fred Bratchie and Rich Womeldorf led the 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature to the green flag, with Bratchie taking command at the start. Jim Bertges was quickly on the move from fourth starting spot, and took command on lap 3 with a pass on the homestretch. Bertges pulled to a healthy advantage before the only yellow flag of the event waved on lap 13. Back to green, the story was the same as Bertges easily controlled the remaining laps to score the victory. Joe Kelley raced home second, ahead of point leader Bob Skwara. Jeff Taylor was fourth, with 20th starting Chuck Kennedy racing home fifth. Heat race winners were Bertges and Skwara.

The 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature started with Jeff Walters and Randy Caldwell on the front row, with Walters taking command at the start. Walters enjoyed a comfortable lead until a lap 12 restart bunched up the field, putting a host of advancers on his bumper. Though Ron Kosecki posed a strong challenge, Walters held on to notch his first career feature win. With the top five cars all under a blanket at the finish, it was Kosecki, 11th starting Butch Lambert, 12th starting Scott Bochek, and 16th starting Joe Kelley racing past the finish line. New point leader Walters and Bochek were Heat race winners.

After finishing last in his first career start one week ago, Mark Marian quickly turned things around by promptly winning in his second career start. Taking the lead on lap 3, after starting third in his number 3M, Marian controlled the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Strictly Stocks. Jesse Fessler made a late charge from 11th starting position but settled for second over point leader Bill Hebenthal, Joe Starcher, and Henry Wilfong. The Heat winners were Marian and Wilfong.

Strictly Stock driver David Sialer was transported by Life-Flight Helicopter to the Hospital after a wreck on the backstretch in the feature. An update on his condition was not available at press time.
