Minersville, PA - April 20 - Big Diamond Raceway just barely avoided going 0
for 3 against the weather in 2001 on Friday night (April 20) as rain returned
at 9:30 after the completion of all nine qualifying heats, forcing the
consolations and features to be delayed to future dates. Features will be
completed over the next three weeks for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
Modifieds, NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman and NASCAR Roadrunners as well as two
Modified consolations and a Sportsman consi.
Afternoon and evening showers forced the NASCAR racing card at Big
Diamond Raceway to get underway about 15 minutes late as track promoter kept
the track surface tight until timing forced him to prepare the track at the
last moment. The track was very fast and tacky enabling six of the nine heats
run to go caution free. But the rain returned and at 10 o'clock the decision
was made to postpone the remainder of the program.
The Modified consolations and feature will be added to the Friday night
card this week (April 27) which is already scheduled for complete cards for
NASCAR's Weekly Racing Series Modifieds, ShorTrack Sportsman and Roadrunners.
Starting positions will all three divisions for the regular card, while the
held-over consolations and feature have already be determined from the April
20 action and the cars signed-in on for the track's original opener on April
Heat winners in the Modifieds prior to the rain-interruption were Terry
Meitzler of Kutztown, PA; Duane Howard of Oley, PA; Jerry Higbie, Jr. of
Slate Hill, NY; and Larry Solomon of Reading, PA, with Howard challenging the
track's ten lap record with a time of 3:06.44. Sportsman heat winners were
all from Pennsylvania, Hershey's Luke Wagner, Mohrsville's Dave Dissinger and
Grantville's Jeff Graby. Completing the list of heat winners were Dave Miller
of Pine Grove, PA; and Corey Renninger of Minersville, PA
The April 27 card is also the first of six Simpson Race Products
Contingency nights at Big Diamond with participants utilizing Simpson
Products will be eligible for checks from Simpson for their performance in
the regularly scheduled features. Tentatively, Simpson Nights have also been
set for May 18, June 15, July 6, July 27 and August 17.
Five cars qualified from each modified heat on April 20 but the top
three were 'handicapped' for feature spots in a process introduced at Big
Diamond for the 2000 season opener. In this case, these twelve drivers earned
back the numbers they originally drew but, while low numbers yielded front
starting spots in the heats, the ordering process is reversed for the feature
and the highest number goes to the front. Thus Ron Seltman, Kyle Weiss, Ray
Swinehart and Randy Bailey will be in the front four starting spots in the
hold-over feature.
On May 4, the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds, NASCAR ShorTrack
Sportsman and NASCAR Roadrunners will again be in action with the Roadrunners
getting two features with the addition of their held-over feature.
Kreiser Fuel's Tremont Quick Stop Night is set for May 11 and the final
held-over feature will be run as the NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman will see
their action starting with the held-over consolation and feature from this
past weekend. Then all three divisions will go in a full card sponsored by
the Tremont Quick Stop.
Gates will open on Fridays at Big Diamond at 6 PM for the 8 PM racing
