Weaver And Coverdale Cover New Egypt Bunny Hop

New Egypt, NJ (Apr. 14) - Milford, DE's Greg Coverdale was no real surprise,
winning the URC Sprint car feature at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night -
but Brian Weaver, making the long tow from Windsor, NY, pulled off a major
upset in the Modified ranks, outmuscling track kingpins Billy Pauch and
Kenny Brightbill to score a hugely popular victory in only his fourth
appearance at the central Jersey oval.

"This is great! And this is a great place!" an exuberant Weaver crowed, as
he jumped atop his racer, brandishing the victory flag. "This is why we come
three and a half hours each week - right here!"

In the 25-lap Modified barnburner, Weaver made his presence known early,
grabbing the point on lap 5 and looking to break loose. However, two-time
track champ Pauch had other ideas: Billy the Kid dogged Weaver up, down and
sideways, finally getting by on lap 17. The crowd figured Pauch to be gone,
blasting out in his patented groove - but Weaver is no quitter. On a
four-to-go restart, Weaver ambushed Pauch, and the two tussled side-by-side
as the grandstands went nuts. Two left, and Weaver found himself barely
edging Pauch and Brightbill in a wild three-way. The New Yorker held on by a
whisker, when Pauch inexplicably looped it in turn 2 coming around for the
checker. The win was sweet and all Weaver's, with a fast-closing Brightbill
second across the line. Keith Hoffman and Mark Bitner followed, with Pauch
gathering it back up to settle for fifth.

In the season debut of the URC Sprint cars, Coverdale stole the lead from
Bill Brian on lap 12 of the 25-lapper and never looked back. It was
Coverdale's 42nd career win with the URC club. Jeremy Trout, Curt Michael,
Brian and Mike Haggenbottom trailed Coverdale at the line.

It was Pat Freiberger of Allentown, NJ, in the 15-lap Street Stock feature
event. Freiberger took control on lap 6 and held off a determined George
Quinlan at the finish. Ralph Gargiulo, Rich Page Jr. and Ken Guyer completed
the top five.

Bordentown, NJ's Pat McBride became the second different winner in the
Mid-State Communications Rookie Sportsman series, besting 15 other novice

A record field of 179 cars completed 22 racing events during the night, in
front of a packed house. The Sportsman feature event was postponed until
next week, due to time constraints.

Old Country Buffet of Toms River, NJ, sponsor of the Easter Eve Bunny Hop,
presented gift certificates and trophies to all feature winners, and flooded
the grandstands with giveaways. Mr. Bunny presided over the track's annual
Easter Egg Hunt for children 10 and under.

Next week, there'll be big-block Modifieds, Street Stocks, Rookies and a
double bill for the Sportsman on the New Egypt dance card. Gates open at
2:30 p.m., with first race at 5:30. Adult admission is $13, children 7-12
are $4, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the track
at (609) 758-1900.
