Soaking Rains Wipe Out New Egypt Opener
New Egypt, NJ (Mar. 31) -- Heaven can wait -- and so can New Egypt
Speedway's 2001 opener, according to Mother Nature. Saturday's scheduled
lidlifter at the central Jersey dirt track was cancelled following soaking
rains on Thursday and Friday, with the promise of more to come.
"The grounds were extremely wet, and the weather forecast did not look
good," said track owner Rick Grosso Sr., who threw in the towel at 11 am
Saturday morning. "We thought it best to cancel early in the day, and kick
it off next week -- hopefully, under sunny skies."
New Egypt's season will now greenlight this Saturday, April 7, when the
big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Mid-State Communications
Rookies take the first official flag on the Grosso family's newly-enlarged
half-mile tri-oval. Adding to the first-night excitement: Moss Landscaping
will present a unique Go for the Green! promotion, featuring $950 in cash
bonuses for lucky drivers, plant giveaways in the grandstands, and a
brand-new bike for one fortunate youngster to wheel home.
Action starts at 5 pm, with gates opening at 2. Adult admission is $13,
children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free. The speedway is located
on Route 539, minutes from Six Flags Great Adventure and the NJ Turnpike.
