WET GROUNDS AND NO SUN STOP BIG DIAMOND OPENING DAY;
BIG FIELD TO RETURN FOR RESCHEDULED SUNDAY, APRIL 8, OPENER
Minersville, PA (April 1) - Big Diamond Raceway was forced to delay their
NASCAR season opener one week to April 8. Although speedway track crew worked
all morning the track took too much water over the past week to even permit
heavy equipment to attempt to run in the inside half of the track.
Big Diamond Raceway will now open the season on Sunday afternoon, April
8, at 2 o'clock. Track gates will open at 11 AM. The NASCAR Weekly Racing
Series Modifieds, NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman and NASCAR Roadrunners will be
"We just did not get enough sun or any breeze either Saturday afternoon
or Sunday morning to help us dry things out from the Friday and Saturday
morning," commented track spokesman, Jeffrey Gromis. "Fritz [Roehrig, track
promoter] waited as long as he could before getting on the track in hopes of
getting more drying."
This week's opener was canceled at 1:30 PM, one half hour prior to the
starting time following a drivers meeting during which drivers and track
officials took a look at and walked the track to examine conditions together.
They agreed there was no hope of getting things run in.
"We were able to run in the top of the track but the lower half of the
banked track just stayed too wet. We could not work down into it without
getting the heavy equipment stuck," continued Gromis. "We had a single
groove, one-half mile track run in but that did us no good at all."
46 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds were on hand along with 29
NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman and 17 NASCAR Roadrunners. Line-ups were not
formed so the draw for starting positions will continue on Sunday, Drivers
who already drew this week will not redraw but any newcomers will be able to
draw into the fields from numbers not yet drawn.
