Rain Rain go away
Sue DuRoy
March 30,2001 Baton Rouge Raceway
I don't think I have ever seen a race track try harder to get a race in
then Baton Rouge Raceway did. It started sprinkling right at race time. About
an hour later the races where finally able to start. Then at half time down
it came again, after spending another hour waiting it out and repacking the
track races features finally where underway. To the workers and owners of
Baton Rouge Raceway job well done. And where done at 11 after all the mess
with the rain.
Rodney Howell led every lap of the pure stock feature and took the
win by whole straightaway over Mark Hardwick, Butch Jenkins, Danny Prathers
and Buecher. Prather and Hardwick took the heat wins.
Conrad Cupit, James Ward and Dale Aucoin all shared heat wins for UMP.
Dale Aucoin started from the pole in the feature, but Conrad Cupit grabbed
the lead from outside the front row till turn two when he slipped high and
Aucoin and James Ward slipped by. James Ward slipped by Aucion for the lead
and went on to score the win followed by Aucoin, Danny Hebert, Bobby Helmer,
and Randy Leonard.
Kerry Vicknair took all the marbles home again in street stock. Vicknair
is on a winning streak and hasn't lost one race at Baton Rouge this year.
Scooter Paetz ran second till Robert Ringo took over second dropping Paetz to
third. Jason Wilks took fourth and Mike Wholgamuth rounded out the top five
in the caution free feature.
Calvin Taylor and Scotty Covington took the heat wins for mini stock.
Richard Mathes from the pole had the early lead. Larry Clayton worked his way
to second and zoomed in on a badly smoking Mathis. Clayton took over the lead
and the win. Right on his heels was Scotty Covington for second. Calvin
Taylor ran third, Elvis Turbville fourth and Mathis took fifth. Also a
caution free race.
Chris Wall and Eric Courville shared the heat wins for late models. Wall
jumped right into the lead on the drop of the green with rain drops coming
down again. A couple laps into it Jerry Bevis got crossed up on the back and
brought out the yellow. On the restart it was Walls followed by Kevin Watts.
Second yellow came to laps later when David Ashley running third got high in
four and Bill Gordon got under him. They ran wheel to wheel down the front
straightaway till turn one where they touched and Ashley spun up to the
wall.As the rain came down the race was shortened and the checkered flew for
Chris Wall, Kevin Watts, Bill Gordon, Kennith Crowe and Ryan Plaisance
